WM. HENRY BASIUK 1924 - 2012 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Henry Basiuk at Selkirk General Hospital on February 29, 2012. Henry will be remembered by his devoted wife of 65 years, Lena, his daughter Loretta and his son-in-law Ken Harder. He was predeceased by his daughter Valerie, his infant daughter Cynthia, and his brother Joseph. The eldest son of Rose and John Basiuk, Henry was born in West Bend, Saskatchewan. After working in the Canada Car during the war, he became a grain buyer before moving to Manitoba in 1955. He worked at building an early power toboggan prototype before becoming a TV and radio repairman and retiring with Lord Selkirk School Division. An active member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Gonor, Henry served as president for many years since 1981. His Ukrainian roots, and especially music, were a source of pride and meaning in his life. A jack of all trades, Henry will be remembered for his sense of fun, his ability to invent or fix, and his horse sense. An accomplished and self-trained violin player, he played a variety of musical instruments, some of which he constructed himself. Beginning as a youth playing at Ukrainian weddings, socials and parties with family members, he continued to entertain for many years and enjoyed music and the fellowship of musicians. Henry was at home in nature. He looked forward to fishing on a quiet lake or on the ice, camping, hunting deer or ducks, and mushroom or berry picking. He also looked forward to meeting with friends for golf or Music Appreciation and to special occasions with his siblings and his family. He was proud of the accomplishments of his daughters and son-in-law. Special thanks to Dr. Elbardisy and the staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for their kindness and dedication. Viewing will be held Sunday, March 4, 2012 from 7:00 8:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, Manitoba. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, March 5, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 6594 Henderson Hwy, Gonor, Mb. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. The family would like to invite everyone to join them after the Ukrainian Orthodox Service for a Celebration of Henry's Life at the Holy Eucharist Hall, 500 Pacific Ave, Selkirk at 12:30 p.m. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • A Little late to the occasion, but better late than never as they say. I played with Henry's daughter in The Vibrations. As I recall, at times Henry would come to some of our dances with his violin. In my music career, NOBODY, could play the violin like Henry......smoke was flying from the finger board. Good bye my good friend....see u on the other side. Rick Cornwell - Posted by: RICK CORNWELL (Friend) on: Jun 25, 2022
