Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryM. GERALDINE HAMILTON It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Geraldine Hamilton, at the age of 85, on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Foyer Valade. Geraldine was born in Winnipeg on November 4, 1926, the only child of William MacGregor Hamilton and SuzAnne (nee DeLorme). She is survived by her loving cousins and their families in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and Missouri. She was predeceased by her father William in 1953 and her mother SuzAnne in 1995. Geraldine was raised and began her education in Fort Garry, attending General Steele School. She continued her education at St. Norbert Convent, St. Mary's Academy and the University of Manitoba. Geraldine resided all her life in Winnipeg, except for the years when she studied social work in Ottawa and Pittsburgh. She was a practising social worker from 1952 to 1986. From 1952 to 1973, she worked for the Children's Aid Society of Winnipeg. In 1973, she began working for the St. James School Division and continued until her retirement in 1986. During these years, she formed many life long friendships and upon retiring, she maintained a busy social life. All her life, she had a love for cats and her cat Puck was very special to her. She was an avid reader and loved listening to her collection of records. When the Centennial Concert Hall opened in March 1968, Geraldine was thrilled with the delights of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Manitoba Opera. She traveled extensively throughout Canada, U.S.A., Mexico, and Europe. Among the many organizations she belonged to, she was an honorary lifetime member of the Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature and the Fort Garry Historical Society. She had a wonderful memory; people enjoyed hearing her recollection of events and personalities. Throughout her life, Geraldine maintained a relationship with the Grey Nuns. She served on many committees, including the Board of Taché Centre for ten years, followed by serving ten years on the Board of Sara Riel Inc. Religion was important in Geraldine's life. She was a lifetime member of the St. Vital Parish in Fort Garry. Geraldine came from a musical family, taking piano and voice training. She gained recognition as a soloist and pianist, during the many years that she sang and conducted in her church choir. A multi-talented woman, Geraldine was an amazing seamstress, exemplified by sewing her entire wardrobe. Many referred to her as the needlewoman, which was revealed in the beautiful pictures and other crafts that she made. She had a keen eye for design and décor, which was evident throughout her home. She took great pride in her flower garden and enjoyed attending to her vegetable and herb garden. Much like her mother, Geraldine loved to entertain friends and family in her home, often preparing gourmet-style meals. Unfortunately, in the spring of 2006, Geraldine encountered major health problems. Due to her strong-will and determination, she continued to live in her Fort Garry home until January 2009. Not being able to cope on her own in her charming family home, she moved to Riverwood Square Assisted Living. Being faced with health issues that continued, she relocated and moved to Foyer Valade in July 2009. The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Foyer Valade. Special thanks to Dr. Mohammed, the 3rd floor nursing staff and aides for your constant understanding, care and compassion. To Jeffrey (Lori) and Debra (Derek), our heartfelt thanks for jumping in and taking over in our absence. We deeply appreciate everything all of you accomplished for us. Appreciation and thanks to E. J. Coutu Funeral Directors and their staff for their efficient and caring assistance. In keeping with Geraldine's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial mass celebrating her life will be held on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Vital Parish, 1629 Pembina Highway. My deepest sympathies to the families. As a young girl living in Fort Garry, WPG I sang in the choir with Geraldine. What a beautiful voice she had! I remember being invited to HIGH TEA with my mother at the house she lived in with her mother. I remember a beautiful book she had on the subject of tea. I shall never forget the memories. I live in CA now but I shall never forget my roots and the wonderful people like Geraldine & her mother who passed through my life. Love, & prayers.
