JOHN SMITH COULING Smith died peacefully on March 31, 2012 at the Riverview Health Centre. He is survived by his sister Margaret (Bernard) Bourret and their daughters: Michele Rogalsky, Sharon Altrogge, Diane Flannagan and Darlene Maxwell and their families; his cats, Cleo and Maggie; and his many friends. Smith was predeceased by his parents, Lorne and Ella, and brother Bill. Smith was born October 19, 1938 in Deloraine, Manitoba and moved to Winnipeg in 1945. He attended Lord Nelson and Isaac Newton schools and St. John's College and the University of Manitoba where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education. His first teaching assignment was in Whitemouth, Manitoba and then for many years taught English at Grant Park High School. Smith thoroughly enjoyed many of the fine things in life - classical music, literature, the arts, good food and the company of friends. Mexican art, language and culture were also a passionate interest, and he made several trips to Puerto Vallarta and immersed himself in the life there. Smith was a true Monarchist - he loved the pomp and pageantry of Royal occasions and keenly participated in Royal visits whenever possible. Smith treasured the time spent with Margie and her family. Uncle Smitty was very proud of his nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews. He always made great contributions to family celebrations, especially holiday dinners, with his charm, wit and great stories. Thanks to Father Fred Olds, Dr. Paul Daeninck, and the special care-givers from CancerCare, Home Care, Palliative Care and the Riverview Health Centre and especially Carole and Miryam who adopted Maggie and Cleo. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Bernadette Church, 820 Cottonwood Road, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre - 3 East Palliative Unit, in Smith's memory. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. • Mr. Smith Couling was our teacher in high school in Whitemouth in the 60's.He was a wonderful teacher and a considerate, thoughtful man. He resolved issues with kindness and humor and encouraged us to respect the opinions of others. He loved to laugh and I am sure he found us quite entertaining. Farewell Mr.Couling. - Posted by: Alex and Grace Walls (students) on: Apr 14, 2012

  • I remember Mr. Couling as a teacher in the 70's at Grant Park when I attended there and then I met up with him again in the 80's when he was a decon at St. Ignatius church. He was always a kind man with nothing but good things to say. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: mike love () on: Apr 14, 2012
