SHEILA SAMPSON RN 1919 - 2012 With heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sheila Sampson (nee Dempsey) on March 30, 2012 at Vista Park Lodge. Sheila is survived by her son Michael (Janet), granddaughters Andrea van Woudenberg and Laurel (Jeremy) Harrison , great-grandchildren Anika and Isobel van Woudenberg and Isla Harrison, brother John Dempsey (Mavis) and many nieces and nephews in England. Sheila will be lovingly remembered by Ella Carmichael, the Lafreniere, Loch and Vickers families and many dear friends near and far. Sheila was predeceased by her husband Jack, and sisters Nora and Margaret. Sheila was born in England in Derbyshire, second oldest in a family of four children. She entered her chosen profession of nursing at age seventeen and nursed throughout the war years. She married Jack in 1945. In England Sheila worked as a midwife, district nurse and as Assistant Matron at the Dorset Geriatric Centre. In 1957 Sheila, Jack and Michael immigrated to Winnipeg. Sheila began nursing at the Municipal Hospitals in Riverview. From 1965 to 1972 she worked as a rehabilitation counsellor for the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society. In 1972 she returned to the Municipal Hospitals as Associate Director of Nursing and retired as Director of Nursing in the late eighties. In retirement she golfed, bowled and volunteered thousands of hours for CancerCare Manitoba and the Alzheimer and Huntington Societies. Sheila helped many friends with appointments and grocery shopping and remained active in the Eastern Star and many other professional associations until failing health required her to stop driving last March. Sheila (Gran) grew delicious tomatoes, filled our Victoria Beach cottage cupboard with will-power defying treats and was a tireless member of the cottage meal management team. She loved the afternoon sun and spent hours enjoying the children playing on the shore and in the lake. Thank you to Wendy Morris, Krista Waring and Marilyn Morrice for their loyal and unwavering support to Sheila and our family. Thanks to Dr. Robyn Olson for her compassionate care over the years and thanks to the Vista Park staff for their respectful care. Special thanks to Dr. Karen Boyd for all she has done for Gran and our family. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 at Thompson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Red River College Nursing Legacy Fund in memory of Sheila Sampson either on line at www.rrc.mb.ca (give to RRC) or by cheque to C306 - 2055 Notre Dame Ave. R3H 0J9.
