DONALD WILLIAM WARD April 28, 1944 - April 6, 2012 It is with profound sadness that the family of Don Ward of Selkirk share the news of his sudden but peaceful passing on Friday, April 6, 2012, at Grace General Hospital ICU with family at his side. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Joyce; sons Michael (Sue), Laury and Richard (Susan), grandson, Robbie, granddaughters, Brittany and Hayley and great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn; also his sisters, Florence, Bernice (Dave) and Darlene (Dale). He will be especially missed by close friends Alex, Don, Gary and Ken and his adored pups Casey and Maggie. Don was predeceased by parents, Jessie and Hugh, niece, Tannis and parents-in-law, Frank and Anna Sawatzky. Don's employment history was extensive and his strong work ethic is legendary. His dedication to 30 years of farming, especially growing potatoes (his favourite food too) is worthy of special note. In 2000, when farming became too overwhelming, he launched himself into a professional trucking career. He worked for L.P.R. Sabourin Trucking Ltd. for the just under 10 years where he earned letters of commendation for best driver and best fuel mileage. He was not only well-liked and respected by his employers but by his fellow drivers as well. On June 8, 2011, at the end of a long day's drive, Don suffered a stroke which broke his spirit. He had currently been making meaningful strides toward recovery when on Saturday, March 31 he was admitted to Selkirk General Hospital diagnosed with pneumonia. On Tuesday, April 3 he was transferred into Grace General Hospital ICU where the dreaded diagnosis of untreatable lung cancer was pronounced. A special thanks to Selkirk District General Hospital ER; and Grace General Hospital ICU staff especially Doctors Kumar, Mallick and Homik. Cremation has taken place and as per Don's wishes no service will be held, however, family and friends are welcome to drop by the house. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Selkirk District General Hospital or the Salvation Army Grace General Hospital in Don's name. I was shocked to hear about Don's sudden passing. Don would often pop in on weekends to see what the boys were working on in the garage and have a cup of coffee. He was a generous guy, if you needed something and he had it, he would borrow it to you. My sympathy to Joyce and her family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Shelley Smith (neighbour) on: Apr 11, 2012

We are surprised and saddened by the news of the sudden passing of an old and dear friend. We have many happy memories of the times we spent together. Although Don was very busy with the farm that he loved, we still had a rare opportunity of a weekend at Wallace Lake, or the occasional hunting venture, dances, ski doing. Our condolences to the whole family on their great loss. - Posted by: Wayne and Gwen Leeson (Friends) on: Apr 09, 2012
