MARLENE MCVICAR It is with great sadness that the family announces Marlene's passing on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the age of 79 years in Winnipeg. Marlene is survived by her daughter, Janet (Richard) of Meadow Lake, SK, her sister, Isabelle Ross of Winnipeg, MB and many nieces and nephews. Bernice Marlene' McVicar (née Cooper) was born in Grandview, MB on August 1, 1932. In 1944 she moved to Winnipeg with her family and lived in St. Vital. Before her marriage, Marlene worked in various places and then worked 14 years at Kipp Kelly Ltd. She worked for the University of Manitoba for the latter 18 years and retired from the President's Office in 1992. Marlene was a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and St. Mary's Road United Church (formerly Regents Park United Church). She travelled to many places that she found very interesting, particularly Nigeria, West Africa when Janet worked there as a volunteer nurse. Marlene took pleasure in visiting friends and relatives in rural areas, at lakeside cottages and in Canada's North and across the rest of Canada and the U.S.A. Marlene was grateful to her family and several close friends who cared about her and made many happy times. It is Marlene's wish that this obituary be very short and express her gratitude and thanks to her friends and family who gave her lots of fun in life and assisted her in some sad and difficult times. Flowers are gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 9Z9 or to St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg, MB R2L 1X3 for the Mission and Education Fund. In keeping with Marlene's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road in St. Vital. A private family interment will be held at a later date. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 253-5086 ejcoutu.com

So very sorry for your loss Janet. I worked with your mom at Kipp Kelly. She was a lot of fun and we shared many a laugh. She even lent me her bumble-bee costume for Halloween one year. She will be missed. - Posted by: Valerie Boddis (Olive) (McCurdy) (Friend from Kipp Kelly Days) on: Jun 25, 2013

Hi Janet, Over the past 12 years or so I have lost touch with you and your Mom so I was shocked to hear the sad news. Her passing got me thinking of all the fun times we had particularily around Christmas time and usually with the Mcleod's as hosts. Your Mom was always a good sport especially when I teased her about getting hooked up with some eligible bachelor! We had some good talks when I would stop by from time to time for a visit while you were up North and away in Africa. I will always have a smile and fond memories of Marlene! - Posted by: Bob Johnston (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2012

I am very sorry to hear of Marlene's passing. I worked with Marlene at the University of Manitoba. She was a Work Group Manager at the time and we spent many hours together trying to solve computer problems. I loved her enthusiasm for life and she would often visit even after she retired. I will miss her smiling face. I was very sorry that I was not able to attend her funeral due to former commitments. Janet: So many decades ago, since we were pre-school age, we became dear friends and spent every possible waking moment of our summers together. I could hardly wait for your arrival from the big old city. I saw how close you were to your Mom and how much you treasured her. She cherished you as well. It's odd Janet, but you have been on my mind so much since the middle of March --I thought it was only because my husband was making a trip to Meadow Lake -- I asked him to take note if your name came up in his business dealings with the hospital etc. I am so sorry about your mom's passing, I know you will be feeling lost without her. Every time you think of her, she will be thinking of you from Heaven. Love, Myrna & Glen - Posted by: Myrna Childs (Henry) and Glen Henry (Grandview Friends in our childhood) on: Apr 19, 2012

Janet, I'm very sorry to hear of your mother's passing. She was a truly lovely friend. I had the privilege of sharing an office with her for four years, including my two pregnancies. She was always supportive and she helped me learn the culture and history of the U of M. She was always proud of you and quick to say so. My thoughts are with you. - Posted by: Julie Mikuska (colleague, office mate) on: Apr 19, 2012

Janet, Dave and I send our heartfelt condolences. Your Mom was one of the most unselfish and caring people that I have known. She was always genuinely interested in what was happening in everyone's lives and was always eager to lend a helping hand if needed. She was a "truly beautiful lady." She will be missed. Marlene has been a loving and faithful friend since our school days at Windsor School. While there have been long stretches when we did not see each other. When we meet it is always as though we begin where we left off. I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Marlene last summer and at Christmas 2011. While she was not well she was cheerful, hopeful and independent. I can picture her serving tea, discussing old times, current issues and looking forward to another visit this spring. Her passing has saddened me deeply. Long and enduring friendships are a precious gift. Love, Joan - Posted by: Joan McCreath (friend for 68 years) on: Apr 12, 2012
