LEONARD ANTHONY LEBOLDUS B.Sc, M.D. F.R.C.S (c) Leonard passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital surrounded by family on Saturday, April 7, 2012. Len was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. The fourth child of Dr. Martin and Mary LeBoldus. He came to Winnipeg in 1959 to attend the University of Manitoba and completed both his Bachelor of Science and his Medical Degree at the U. of M. He chose Urological Surgery as his specialty and after a Post Fellowship Program at Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto returned to Winnipeg in 1972 to begin his career and long Partnership at the Winnipeg Clinic, during which time he held many positions on their Board including Head - Section of Urology and Chief Executive Officer. He had operating privileges at the Misericordia Hospital for 30 years, serving at Committee level and as Chief of Medical Staff. He also operated at the Victoria and Grace Hospitals and at the Health Sciences Centre. He was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery - University of Manitoba, Urology Section Head - Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and Senior Member - Canadian Urological Association. He was a collaborator with the National Research Council of Canada and served on Arbitration Panels, Standards Review Committees nationally, as well as participating on a global Standards Committee for the treatment of prostate cancer. As a surgeon, Len was blessed with a creative mind, a wonderful pair of hands, and a caring and kind heart. He was never too busy to take a call, to offer medical advice or facilitate access to treatment for a friend, and often to strangers referred by a friend. He willingly waited up nights to take part in the kidney transplant program. He was particularly proud of the Prostate Cancer Dinner, the first of its kind in Canada, which he was instrumental in establishing to raise funds for the new Centre. Len's family meant everything to him. He participated fully in their activities, their early morning practices, weekend tournaments, the family ski trips, learning together, and at the heart of the family, the Lake, where together we built docks, finished building the cottage, planted trees, picnicked and laughed in the sun. Len loved to laugh, whether at a good joke or a bad one, with all of us or at himself. His time with the Bakers Dozen and hunting at Waterhen Lodge were very special times, shared with special friends. Len is survived by Pam, who loved him for 50 years, his children Geoff (Vicki and Gillian), Tom (Laurina) and Lauren (Sean). Our grateful thanks will always go to those who cared for him in the past years: Dr. Alvin Schroeder, Dr. Paul Shelton, Elizabeth and Evangeline Natoza, Judy and the staff on the Geriatric Unit at Seven Oaks Hospital, the staff at the Simkin Centre, and finally, Dr. Nkosi and the wonderful Residents and Nurses at the Victoria General Hospital. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 9:30 a.m., at Westminster United Church, 745 Westminster Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the LeBoldus Leadership Award, Faculty of Medicine - University of Manitoba, or the Prostate Centre, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermott Avenue - Rm ON1160 in Winnipeg. Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • Dear Mrs. Leboldus and family. I know this is close to three years after Len's passing but I was writing a letter to a friend about my best mentors in my career and Len was the top of my list. He was so good to me....I met him when I was a 23 year old emergency room doctor at the Vic. He took me under his wing, invited me to assist him at surgery and helped me with my career. When I went into Family Practice, he was my invaluable Urology consultant. He was magic in the OR. His able generation is gone forever. I miss him. • In Sept. 1992 Dr. Leboldus operated on me for advanced prostate cancer. For some unknown reason-he said it himself the last time I saw him-I am still here. With his medical and compassionate help and with help from cancer care I am still here and he is gone. I can only express my deepest sympathy to his wife and family for his passing and to let them know that he is gone but definitely not forgotten. I was so fortunate to have him as my prostate cancer doctor. - Posted by: keith malcolm (patient) on: Apr 15, 2012
