CARL BRIAN GUSTA 1948 - 2012 Carl died in a tragic accident in West Vancouver on March 16, 2012. He is survived by his brother Don (Connie), niece Natasha; sister Joan, niece Michell (Simon) (New Zealand), and nephew/godson Michael. Carl graduated as a mechanical engineer from the University of Manitoba in 1970. His work took him to Aruba, Ontario, Alaska, Chile and Mexico. He moved to British Columbia in the 1970s and fell in love with the mountains and Vancouver. He loved skiing on Blackcomb Mountain until he fell and broke his hip. He loved cooking; caesar salad, barbequed salmon and lemon cheesecake were some of his notable dishes. Growing roses was another one of his passions. Carl was a devoted brother, uncle and godfather. He spent quality time with his nieces and nephew, often traveling great distances to be with them. Carl was a friend to many, a colleague and an advisor. He will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Words cannot express how much we will miss Carl. We spent a lot of time together over the years and these will be memories that we cherish. Our sincere thanks to Joan for letting us know, very thoughtful of you to take the time. - Posted by: John & Cheryl Melnick (Friends and colleagues) on: May 18, 2012

  • I was shocked and sad to hear the accidental death of Carl. I have worked with Carl between 1980s and 1990s and still keep in touch as a trusted friend and councillor. I can understand why Carl is sorely missed by his family. My deep sincere sympathy to the entire family. - Posted by: Jeffer Chan (Former colleague) on: Apr 19, 2012

  • I am sorry to hear about Carl's death and apologize for not attending his memorial service. We spent most of our school years as classmates and friends and planned to attend university together after both being accepted to the Faculty of Engineering. However, our paths went in different directions. My condolences to his family and all those close to him. All God's blessings to you Carl. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Patrick Tarnopolski (Elementary and high school classmate) on: Apr 18, 2012

  • Carl was one of the first engineers I worked with at the start of my career, some 20 years ago. There wasn't anyone he didn't know and if he didn't know someone, well, he soon would. His unique sense of humour helped us all through just about any absurdity. He was a terrific workmate and a mentor to many, always making a point of staying in touch with people for decades, in many cases. As much as he will be missed, he will forever remain a vibrant and living part of those of us whose lives (and careers) he directly influenced. My deepest condolences to family and close friends. Saddened as I am, I can only imagine the depth of loss felt by those who were lucky enough to have been even closer to Carl. - Posted by: Annelies (Liessi) Haussler (Colleague) on: Apr 18, 2012

  • Sincere sympathy to the entire family. Not many of us left from the old neighbourhood; even the neighbourhood is "gone." May your memories & faith sustain you as you travel through the healing process. - Posted by: Caroline Stevenson (Lefteruk) (neighbors, classmates) on: Apr 16, 2012
