BERNARD (BARNEY) JOSEPH THOMPSON September 13, 1929 - April 14, 2012 It is with deep sadness our family announces the passing of Barney; beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his first wife of 26 years Aline (Potvin) and his second wife of 23 years Mary-Jean (Thiele). Left to cherish Barney's memory is his loving wife Pat, his seven children, Lyn (Sue), Susan, Donna (Mike), Nancy (George), Victoria (Hamzah), Sandra (Dave), Robert (Karen), his three stepchildren, Doug (Joanne), Kimberly (Dale), Chuck (Mistie), 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Barney was born and raised in Ottawa, ON. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1951 (RCEME) and served in the Korean War. He retired from the forces in 1978. Barney remained active as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Korean Veterans Assoc. Following his retirement Barney worked for the commissionaires, security in the RCMP building, hotel maintenance at the Polo Park Inn and even had the opportunity to serve dinner to the Jets before their hockey games. Eventually Barney moved to Matlock, MB. You could always find him playing with the dog, puttering around in his workshop or helping out the neighbours. Over his lifetime Barney enjoyed curling, fishing, darts, dancing, carpentry, bar-b-ques with the family and so much more, too numerous to mention. In 2001 Barney met Pat, and they were wed in 2004. His blue eyes would twinkle when he would look at her. The love and happiness they shared together was truly unique. All of us will remember Barney's smile, his kind heart and the love he shared with his family and friends. Special Thanks to Dr. Zabib and the Gimli Community Health Centre. Cremation has taken place and the celebration of Barney's life will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Winnipeg Beach Legion, 20 Hamilton Ave., Winnipeg Beach, MB. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society in Barney's memory. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
