FRANCES JEAN BURKOWSKI Peacefully on Thursday, April 19, 2012 with her family by her side, at the Beausejour Hospital, Frances Burkowski, aged 88 years. Frances was predeceased by her husband Edward; son Norman and parents Nicholas and Mary Grycki. Frances is survived by son Konrad (Eleanor); daughter Maria Mackay (Gord); grandchildren Adam Burkowski (Natasha), Jordan Burkowski, Lindsay Mackay; great-grandchild Aleksander Burkowski; daughter-in-law Leanne Burkowski and sisters Adeline Szalanski and Therese Bodnar. Frances was born in Cook's Creek, MB on October 4, 1923. Frances married Edward in 1945. They resided in Garson, MB where they raised their three children and where Frances continued to live after Edward's passing in 1962. Frances's strength of character enabled her as a single parent to raise three young children, work full-time and manage the home and family farm. Frances was employed as Director of Housekeeping at East Gate Lodge and Beausejour Hospital until her retirement in 1988. Frances never truly retired. She devoted her time, talent and worked tirelessly to ensure the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Garson flourished. Frances's charitable mission work included supporting foster children, missionary organizations and making rosaries for people in developing countries. Frances also found time to travel in her retirement to the Far East, Middle East, Europe as well as pilgrimages to Yugoslavia and Mexico. Frances was very hospitable and welcomed family and friends with loving open arms and when you left her home it was always too soon. Frances was like a mother to everyone she met. Frances' favourite expression was don't worry, it will all work out . While others worried, Frances would do something about it and meet the challenge head on. It is now Frances's time to rest, and for us to carry on where she left off. Thank you to family, friends, staff of Beausejour Hospital and Dr. Gabriel for their outpouring of love and support. Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 25 in the Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk. Funeral Mass will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 26 in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Garson. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Garson, MB ROE ORO. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Terry, I'm so sorry for your loss. You've been in my thoughts over a period of time, but even more so this morning as I put on the earrings you gave me from Egypt, I believe. Take care. - Posted by: Joyce Ward (friend of sister, Therese) on: Apr 28, 2012

  • Frances was a wonderful neighbour for over fifty years. The children grew up together, especially Gerry and Maria with our dog, Cindy, following them everywhere. She kept a marvellous yard and garden and passed our old house many times each week on her way to church. We will miss her! - Posted by: Bonnie Danyluk (née Kotchon) and June Kotchon (Neighbours) on: Apr 26, 2012

  • Aunt Frances was truly a great lady who was devoted to her family, friends and her church.I will miss her greatly, as she was like a second mother to me. We both shared the love of the woods and called ourselves the Blueberry Queens. I will always love and remember this special lady. - Posted by: Louise Yokimas (Aunt) on: Apr 25, 2012

  • Frances was always a pleasure to talk to at family gatherings; and a true lady. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. - Posted by: catherine howden () on: Apr 24, 2012

  • When I saw your moms photo in today's paper I immediately remembered the amazing and beautiful woman that she was. As was said, she welcomed us into her home those 25 years ago and she was a lovely, generous hostess. She was always so classy and beautifully dressed! I hope you have many happy memories of your mom at this sad time. - Posted by: Linda Girling (Friend of Maria ) on: Apr 22, 2012

  • Aunt Frances was a true lady. She had the capacity to care and do effortlessly. She always wanted to know how you were, she made you feel so special. The last time I had the chance to speak with her she was doing just this, wanting to know how I was after some health concerns. She was so pleased when I said it could be better but it could also could be worse. I had told her that was how I look at these things, worry does not help. She had agreed yes these things do work out. Aunt Frances had much wisdom, strength, and character. She will be missed by many. - Posted by: Sandra Grycki Groves (Great niece) on: Apr 21, 2012
