Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARIA MAZZEI (nee MOSTARDA) February 1, 1931 - May 4, 2012 Sadly we announce that Maria Mazzei passed away on Friday, May 4, 2012 with her family by her side at the age of 81 years. She was predeceased by her husband Francesco on December 17, 1974, and her sister Franca in 2010. Maria was born in Poggio Bustone, Rieti, Italy on February 1, 1931. In 1962 Maria and Francesco, as well as their first two children, immigrated to Canada and settled in Transcona. Maria is survived by her four children Giuliana (Garry), Gino, Enza, and Cristina (Ray); grandchildren Jasmine, Mathew, Tyler, Sabrina, Ryan and Alexander, great-grandchildren Paige and Maddix; brother Domenico (Carmelina) and other brothers and sisters in Italy. Maria was a very strong woman, she did everything on her own after the passing of her husband. She always was an independent woman. Maria was known for her cooking and would feed anyone who passed through her door. She enjoyed dancing in her younger days, especially Tangoes and Waltzes. She also enjoyed travelling, knitting, sewing, embroidery and gambling. She was very good in whatever she did. Maria overcome many hurdles in her life, but her passion was gardening, her beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens, and the grapes that she grew. Her sense of humour will be greatly missed by both her family and friends. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctor's and staff at the Concordia Hospital Emergency, also a very special thank you to Mom's wonderful and loving neighbours. Viewing will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012 in the Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematorium, 1800 Day St. from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Funeral service to follow at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 11 also at 1800 Day St. Interment to follow at Transcona Cemetery. I had the privilege of looking after the lawn at Maria's for over the past 10 years. Such pride she took in the lawn-such pride she always carried with herself. We would chat for 15-20 mins 3 or 4 times a year and I would always leave marvelling at how positive she always was considering how much her health was a deterrent to just even breathing. I'll always remember growing up with you kids what a passionate and great sense of humor your mom had --she was such a spunky lady!!! My mom and other relatives called her the "Romana"(the Roman).
