SHIRLEY MARIE NELSON (nee BLANCHETTE) 1943 - 2012 On Thursday, May 3, 2012 at Selkirk and District General Hospital, Shirley Nelson passed away peacefully. Shirley was born October 12, 1943 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. She had a long secretarial career and continued to keep in contact with many of her past co-workers over the years. She was one who was always eager to take on a new challenge and when computers were first introduced to her workplace, after lots of late nights, she not only mastered it in order to perform her duties, but was selected to set up the office network and also to travel to other branches to teach employees. She received a 10 year service award from Motorola prior to them closing operations in Manitoba. Shirley took on new hobbies with the same enthusiasm and determination, which included furniture refinishing, decorative egg making, (which she gave as gifts to many friends and family), her many needlepoint, petit point and cross stitch works were impeccable and adorned the walls of her home. Her greatest pleasure was putting on dinner parties for friends or family until her health no longer allowed her continue this passion. Although hesitant to move out of the city when Jack retired, she quickly embraced the small town country life. A big part of the retirement plans was to winter south and she truly enjoyed the four years she was able to winter in Texas and valued her many snowbird friends and visitors. She is survived by her loving husband, Jack Ivan Nelson. Left to mourn her passing is her sister, Lorraine Brown in Abbotsford, BC, brothers, Mike Blanchette (Gail) of Alberta, Christopher Blanchette (Sophia) of Vancouver, BC and Mark Blanchette of Winnipeg as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, and fondly by Jack's family. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Winnipeg Beach Legion at 20 Hamilton Ave. with celebrant Vince Anderson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's memory to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Room ON1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
