MICHAEL BARON Michael Baron, 88, died peacefully on June 14, 2012 at his residence at the Irene Baron Eden Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Son of William Baron and Anne Maluga, Michael was born on July 22, 1923 in Brandon, MB, but he spent his childhood in Dauphin. After his marriage to Irene Beyette on July 17, 1947, they moved to Winnipeg where, with their daughter Colleen, they spent the rest of their years together. They were married for 62 years before her death in June 2009. During the Second World War he joined the Air Force where he trained as a pilot, but served as a chef in Quebec. Following the war, Michael worked for CN Rail for 45 years as Service Manager in the Dining Car. During this time he entered into the care home business. In 1954 they opened the Baron Nursing Home, then went on to open the Arcadia Nursing Home; together they built the Maples Personal Care Home, River East Personal Care Home, Baron Estates, and most recently, the Irene Baron Eden Center. Michael was a pioneer for seniors care in Winnipeg and worked tirelessly to build personal care homes that had top of the line care with a loving and warm atmosphere. A lover of animals, Michael always had a dog at his side. In his earlier years Michael enjoyed hobbies such as aviation, sailing, canine training and cooking. He was an avid ornithologist and looked forward every year to the return of the Purple Martin to his backyard bird houses. Michael is survived by his grandsons Joshua (Allison) and Jordan van Leeuwen, great-grandchildren Noah and Benjamin Van Leeuwen, brother Archie Baron, and sister Isabelle (Bill) Holtz. He is predeceased by his wife Irene (nee Beyette), daughter Crolleen van Leeuwen, brother Steve Baron, and sister Mildred Hepting. A memorial sevice will be held on Saturday, June 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Thomson In the Park , 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • It has been my pleasure to have known and worked with Michael Baron (at Maples PCH and River East PCH) for the past 32 years. He communicated easily and respectfully with people at all levels of employment, and made a gracious effort to provide beautiful gatherings for long-term and retiring staff. Michael and Irene were wonderful friends and enjoyed visiting them on special occasions. Irene always came with a thoughtfully chosen gift. Michael was generous, and even as his health declined in the last couple of years, he was thinking of how he could help somebody in some way. I am grateful for many good memories, and am sure he will be missed by his friends, his family, his employees, and especially the senior citizens for whom he created lovely, safe, and efficient personal care homes and assisted-living residences. - Posted by: Karol and Marcela Bacik (Employee and friend for 32 years) on: Jun 22, 2012

  • IT HAS BEEN SUCH A PRIVILEGE TO WORK FOR MICHAEL & IRENE BARON. THEY BROUGHT LOVE, HOPE AND ABOVE ALL CHARITY TO ALL. THEIR GOODWILL TOWARDS SENIORS WAS REMARKABLE. THEY TAUGHT US SO MUCH. I MISS YOU BOTH. - Posted by: EVELYN CHARTRAND (EMPLOYEE FOR 20 YEARS) on: Jun 22, 2012

  • Saying farewell is a sad affair to someone special like Michael. Memories, going back many decades come to the fore; Like being neigbours on Mayfair Place with our corresponding nursing homes. Also the many Nursing Home owners' meetings we held at the Charter House and his keen interest and participation was always appreciated. Spending time with his flight training module in his garage was a blast. Followed by our flight to Brandon and back arriving after dark. I vividly remember that trip as if it was yesterday. With our mutual involvements time has flown. Of lasting remembrance was your ability to be genuinely interested in whomever you were meeting, such as our last meeting at the Irene Center. We walked and talked about our interest in facilities and long term care for seniors. Your contribution and goodwill toward the Long term care community was exemplary. You'll be greatly missed. - Posted by: Herman Thorvaldson (Thorvaldson Care Center) (Long-time friend) on: Jun 20, 2012

  • Michael and Irene were long time customers of my store where we all enjoyed talking about the birds in their yard. Since Irene's passing no Spring has been the same without hearing from her about the Baltimore Orioles which she loved so much. As for Michael, the Bluejays will miss him thorougly as he generously provided them with endless peanuts. These are two customers I will always remember, such generous, positive, caring people. I will miss them dearly and thank them kindly for all their support over the years. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Sherrie Versluis (From The Preferred Perch) on: Jun 20, 2012

  • Dear Michael. I was sad to hear that you left us. I know that your reunion with Irene will be a happy one. You were both very good to me when I came to Canada. You were like parents to me when I needed them and we had many good times in the past. Rosemary and I miss you both. - Posted by: Adrian de Wildt (friend) on: Jun 20, 2012

  • Spent many hours with Michael at the Maples and also River East talking about the railroad, politics, flying and his vision of how a good personal care home should operate and how he liked to know as many of his staff as possible. Although he thought his hands were sometimes tied behind his back Michael you did run the most caring and best personal care homes in Winnipeg. R.I.P. Michael you earned it. My thoughts go out to Joshua and Jordan. - Posted by: Harry Smith (Friend) on: Jun 19, 2012

  • Mr & Mrs Baron were the nicest couple that I've ever met. He Knew my brother very well as they were neighbors and they would visit each other all the time. He loved to visit my broher's back yard, he would tell me "how does your brother have the time to have one of the most beautiful back yards in our neighborhood" when he used to live in his beautiful home. Whenever he used to see me at work he would allways take the time to say hi and say, sit down and chat with me for awhile longer. I'll never forget one time I was on my break outside and my break was over and I said I need to go. His reply would still be, stay longer. He loved to chat with people and his staff. He truly was a gentle soul that would help anyone in need. We will miss you. My deepest sympathy to all of his family. Our regrets to not being able to attend his service on Friday as we also have a service for my father-in-law who passed away on Thursday night out of town. - Posted by: Filomena Radlinsky (Employed at his Personal Care Home ) on: Jun 19, 2012
