OLGA DOWBETA (nee IWANCHUK) 1930 -2012 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Olga Dowbeta on Friday, June 22, 2012, at Seven Oaks General Hospital at the age of 81. She leaves to mourn her husband of 59 years, Steve; children, Greg (Gaye), Michael (Sherri) and Nancy (Rick); grandchildren, Michelle (Scott), Alex, Courtney, Kevin, Wes (Jen) and Andy; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Riley and Liam; sister-in-law Ruth Iwanchuk, and many nieces, nephews and close friends. Mom was predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Oksana Iwanchuk, her brothers Paul, Mike, Wesley, Alex, Peter, Nick and Cecil, sister Vera Hnatiuk, and sister-in-law Mary Iwanchuk. Mom was born on October 24, 1930, near Minitonas, Manitoba, where her family settled after arriving in Canada from Ukraine. She received her schooling at the Oakhurst School, a one room schoolhouse which, she liked to remind us, she walked to every day, uphill in both directions. Once she finished school, Mom and her best friend Jennie headed for the bright lights of Winnipeg. It was here that she met Steve, and they were married on October 17, 1953. Mom was a longstanding member of St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and also the Women's Church Auxiliary. While raising her family, Mom worked at Christie Biscuits, then at Eaton's, first downtown and later at the Garden City store, until she retired. When the grandchildren came along, they were Baba's greatest joy and she spent endless hours showering them with love and attention. Not to mention perogies, holupchi and her legendary "feed an army" dinners, not only for the kids, but for all who entered her home. For many years, Mom and Dad enjoyed spending time at their trailer at Camp Veselka near Gimli. When her health began to deteriorate, they did not spend as much time there as Mom would have liked, but as much as she and Dad could manage. They also enjoyed their road trips to Grand Forks with their friends from church, which always resulted in any number of humorous stories to tell when they got home. After a series of strokes in 2006, and with more and more health issues emerging, Mom remained feisty and did what she could as for the rest, she always said "Oh well, tomorrow's another day," "One day at a time" and "Whatever will be, will be." She had made her peace. Although we will miss her very much, Mom has left us a lifetime of memories and a legacy that will live on through us and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Prayers will be sung on Wednesday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street. Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 28 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 820 Burrows Avenue, with The Rev. Fr. Alexander Harkavyj officiating. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Mom to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
