EVA MARIE DEAN It is with profound sadness that Judy and Robert Quirk of Winnipeg and Vyrna Dean and Catherine Quirk of Toronto announce the death of their beloved mother, mother-in-law and grandmother, Eva Marie Dean at her home at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre on Monday, July 2, 2012. Eva was also known as Givee by her family and close friends, in part to reflect her loving and giving nature. Eva was born February 3, 1921 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan to Harry and May Piercy and grew up on the family farm near Churchbridge. She left home at the age of 15 so that she could attend high school and business school in Yorkton. She very much enjoyed her work and the friends she made as a secretary, first at International Harvester in Yorkton and later at Tupper and Adams law firm and the St. Vital School Division in Winnipeg. It was in Yorkton that she met her beloved Gordon, whom she married in Winnipeg on June 30, 1944 when he was on leave from his naval duty in the Atlantic. When Gordon returned from the war they settled in Brandon where their two daughters were born. They relocated to Winnipeg in 1952 and Eva lived in St. Vital for 52 years, moving to Lindenwood Manor in 2004 and to the Golden Door Geriatric Centre on June 1 of this year. Mom was a vibrant, energetic person who loved people, who loved to be on the go and who loved to visit. She made too many lasting friendships to count throughout her life, from her roommate in Yorkton whose husband was also off to the War, to the Imperial-Stranmillis Avenue coffee girls when she was an at-home mom, her fellow members of St. Mary's Road United Church since 1952, Jubilee Chapter of the Eastern Star, Khartum Shrine Temple Daughters of the Nile, Ladies' Auxiliary and Ladies' Bowling League. She was a truly committed member of every organization she belonged to, attending every meeting possible and pitching in to help out at every tea, bazaar, raffle, phoning committee and fundraiser that came along. Eva was a very special mother and wife. She taught us to handle all of life's challenges with determination and always do what we were called upon to do. She taught us to find the joy in life, to have fun and laugh, to find humour in everyday things. She encouraged us to follow our dreams as she had. She welcomed our friends who became her friends. She was a remarkable role model and she leaves us with a lasting legacy of friendship, kindness, faith, involvement and commitment, and always a smile. Eva is survived by her immediate family as well as by several nieces and nephews throughout Western Canada. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon in August, 2000, by her parents and her two sisters, Thelma Kurucz of Esterhazy and Cora Breen of Kelowna and their husbands and by her sister-in-law, Vyrna Hansen and husband, Carl of Calgary. We offer our sincere thanks to the staffs and residents at Lindenwood Manor and the Golden Door for the very important roles they played in making the last eight years of Eva's life so happy and fulfilling, and to everyone who knew and cared for her at Victoria Hospital from February to the end of May. Thanks also to the many friends who visited Mom in hospital and at Golden Door and to her two great-nieces, Victoria Hall and Bobbie Guarino for the kindness and love they have shown Auntie Eva over the years. A memorial service for Eva will be held on Thursday, July 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Lindenwood Manor, Heritage Entrance, 475 Lindenwood Drive East. Flowers are gratefully declined but if friends wish, contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB would be greatly appreciated. I was truly saddened to hear of Sister Eva's death. She was a previous secret pal of mine and was again this year my secret pal - I dropped off little offerings at the hospital but could not say who they were from. I tried to find out more details from Don and Jo Rae about her - keeping her in my thoughts and prayers. I will truly miss Sister Eva. She was a remarkable lady. - Posted by: Sandra Drysdal (Sister of the Order of the Eastern Star) on: Jul 10, 2012

We were so saddened to hear of Givee's death... because of our friendship with Vyrna she has been a part of our lives since the mid 1970s. As we thought of the different times we spent with her our sadness lifted and turned to laughter. There are so so many memories of her - too many to recount. Among the highlights was the day when she, Vyrna & Lori had a 'girls day out' to have their make-up & colours done; or all the times we heard her say 'Oh Gordon' when he stepped over her invisible line; and one we will never forget is the look on her face when Ted unwittingly offered Catherine what probably was her first glass of Champagne at age 16. We were so so privileged to know this amazingly special woman and while we offer condolences to Vyrna, Judy, Robert & Catherine we also toast Givee for a life well lived! - Posted by: Ted & Lori Faultless (Friends with her daughter, Vyrna) on: Jul 07, 2012
