OREST CHORNEY January 20, 1935 - July 5, 2012 With the warm summer sun shining, the winds blowing in the hay fields, and with his family at his side, it is with heavy hearts that we announce Orest's passing. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of almost 58 years, Stella, his children; Brian (Carolyn), Ken, Linda (Ray), and Gail (Bill), his grandchildren: Scott (Susie), Kyle (Shannon), Daina (Matt), Leanne (Kevin), and Davis, and his great-grandchildren: Evan, Emily, Breanna, and Claire. Orest also leaves behind his brother John (Sylvia), sister Mary, sister Julie (Zennon), brother Mers (Violet), sister-in-law Marianne, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Jessie Chorney, brother Ed Chorney, sister Elise Chorney, brother-in-law Ed Luschinski, mother-in-law Anne Pidwinski, and father-in-law Bill Pidwinski. Orest was one of the hardest working people that anyone knew. He lived his life to help others and never thought of himself first. If he knew someone was in need of help or advice, whether it was financial, mechanical or building related, he was there in a heartbeat. People who knew Orest knew of his caring heart and his generosity. He always kept his family close to his heart. Even in his last days he was still worried about how he could help his family. He loved his wife Stella dearly from the time they were young teenagers and, although he may not have always expressed it, we always saw that twinkle in his eyes whenever there was a family celebration. He always gave the impression that he was as tough as nails' but that always gave way to tears of joy when Christmas or a birthday came along. Orest's love for his grandchildren was very strong and he was very proud to have his eldest grandsons Scott and Kyle join him in the farming business. He taught them so much, not only about farming, but about life in general. He spent countless hours at hockey games (he never missed a game even for out-of-town trips!) and was known as the team Grandpa. He loved the family dinners at Gail and Bill's and enjoyed all the time he spent with Daina and Leanne. When Davis visited in the summers, it was Grandpa who let him drive for the first time in the old white truck. When he became a Great-Grandpa, he once again lit up watching his great-grandchildren laugh and play. They always made him smile whenever they were around. Orest loved his work immensely, and was still selling cars and helping Jason run the garage, as he had done for 54 years. His first love was farming and he always seemed happiest after a long day on the tractor. The family would like to thank Dr. Silha who showed such great compassion in caring for Orest and Dr. Koven and Dr. Storsley for all their care. Also, thank you to the ICU team at Seven Oaks General Hospital for their care and compassion in his last four days. He fought a hard fight but he knew it was his time to say goodbye and rest. We love you dad, you will always be with us no matter where we are in our lives. Thank you for everything. You were our hero. A service will be held at Gilbart Funeral Home in Gimli on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at St. Basil's Cemetery in Fraserwood, MB. Pallbearers are Scott McMurtry, Kyle McMurtry, Davis Chorney, Ray McMurtry, Bill Souch, Matt Codville, and Jason Chorney. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or The Manitoba Diabetes Society. Vichnaya Pam' Yat Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli, in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I remember when I was just a "young" cousin and was stranded cause my "Vega" stopped in the middle of Provencher and wouldn't start. Orest did fix my car in his garage in Winnipeg. - Posted by: Mary Sitar, Melissa Weselake, Derek Weselake (cousin, second cousin, second cousin) on: Sep 29, 2012

  • Our dad was a self made man, he could do anything, from woodworking, car repairs, building, snowmobiling, cutting wood in the bush, fixing any kind of machinery, farming. But most of all being there when we needed him for anything. We miss being able to pick up the phone and asking for his advice. He was one of the most intelligent men you could know. He was also the most generous of people, not just to his family but to his customers. Dad you never accepted your diabetes, and I wish you had, life would have been so much easier for you but as for everything you had to do it your way. Rest in peace you deserve this, we love you and will have you in our memories forever. Mom will be taken care of by us all. I only wish you did not have to leave us yet, the boys will carry on and get things done for you. Love you dad - Posted by: Linda and ray mcmurtry (Daughter and son in law) on: Aug 12, 2012
