Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPAULA JEANNE VERSTRAETE (nee BECELAERE) March 23, 1923 - July 7, 2012 With great sadness we announce the passing of Paula Verstraete. She was predeceased by her younger brother, Marcel Becelaere, and her sister, Helen Dachuk. Paula is survived by George, husband of 66 years, children, Joan Joyal (Ernie), Larry (Jo), Bob, Maureen Schmidt (Tom), Irene Sallee (Danny) and Janice Sheedy (Chris), 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Paula was born in Torhout, West Flanders, Belgium. She came to Canada when she was four years old and later in life met George at the Belgian Sacred Heart Church where they married on December 1, 1945. Paula was a devoted wife and loving mother who raised their six children in St. Boniface while she selflessly cared for her father-in-law, Edmond, for 12 years. As a wonderful homemaker, she spent many hours baking, knitting, sewing and enjoyed bingo and trips to Grand Forks with her friends. Paula volunteered her time as treasurer of the C.W.L. and the League for Life. She was a very kind and thoughtful person with a wonderful sense of humour who will be missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank Dr. Danais-Brown for her kindness and excellent care over the years. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 13, at Holy Cross Parish, 252 Dubuc Street, at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. I have met and talked to Mr. & Mrs. Verstraete many times over the years for Joyal/Lafreniere family events. Mrs. Verstraete was always gentle, kind and a good listener. My condolences to Joan, Ernie & family. Take care and remember all the special times spent together.
