Date of Passing: Jul 09, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMOHAMED IKRAMULLA (IKE) HUSSAIN MD FRCS(C) FACS Dedicated surgeon Dr M I Ike Hussain passed away on July 9 at Selkirk Hospital, aged 74, leaving friends and family to remember his gentle ways and engaging smile. Ike was born in Bangalore, India's city of gardens. Relatives tell of a bright, energetic and mischievous child. Ike was also very determined, choosing his vocation as a surgeon early in life. He graduated from the prestigious Kasturba Medical School, taking internships first in Bangalore and then Binghamton, New York. Young Dr Hussain went on to a surgical residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he impressed his colleagues (including future wife Dr Maralyn MacKay) with his talents both in the operating theatre and at the doctors' lounge ping pong table. Ike and Maralyn wed in 1969 and the couple moved to Winnipeg where Ike completed his surgical training at the University of Manitoba. In 1970, Dr Hussain began his surgical practice in Selkirk the community he would serve with great energy and commitment until his retirement in 2010. During the 40 years Ike worked in Selkirk, Beausejour and the surrounding communities, he was known as a leader, mentor and a doctor with dedication and stamina. Often soft-spoken, Ike lead through his example of diligence, integrity and respect for others. His first priority was always the care and best interests of his patients. Dr Hussain was president of the Selkirk Medical Center for 30 years and was active in the Manitoba College of Physicians and Surgeons, including terms as Chair of the Area Standards Committee, the Complaints Committee and the Standards Committee. He served a term on the Manitoba Research Council. Ike also spent time on the Boards of Balmoral Hall and the Professional Financial Credit Union. Last but not least, Ike Hussain was a co-founder of the Selkirk and District Community Foundation, which, as he intended, has become a positive and lasting legacy for the people of Selkirk. Ike was equally energetic and rigorous in his daily life. Without fail, he would rise early and greet the day with coffee, orange juice and two eggs. He was a prodigious reader, always up to date on the minutiae of current affairs. Ike also had an appreciation for art, amassing a large collection of English pottery. He was a keen photographer himself, with many of his prints hanging in the family home. Ike and Maralyn built their home together, with Ike organizing much of the project himself. Ike had a natural aptitude for games and sports and enjoyed skiing, swimming, windsurfing and frisbee. More than once he outplayed his children, nephews and nieces at pool, ping pong, carroms or crokinole. He was always moving, encouraging the kids to come on some kind of activity or adventure. Even if the adventure was just a trip to Costco (Ike couldn't resist a good deal). Although Ike was an intensely private person, he was also abundantly generous. He gave decades of compassionate and dedicated service to his patients. To his friends and family, he demonstrated deep loyalty and love; sometimes simply through a smile, a joke, or (if you were lucky) constant teasing. His quiet charisma was matched by intelligence and wit as sharp as his scalpel. He touched so many lives; we are all enriched by his gifts. Ike leaves wife Maralyn, daughter Talia, son Tarek (Carey), family friend Ailsa and beloved grandson Breck who brought indescribable joy to his Pampa. Ike's niece Sufia (Chad, Wesley) and nephews Aman, Cameron (Lisa, Kelsey) and Arthur (Bobbi, John, Sydney) share happy memories of lake time, ski holidays, and Christmases with Uncle Ike. Ike held a special place in the family for his brothers Enayath (Sultana), Nyamath (Sul), sister Suraiya, sisters-in-law Amu and Donna, brother-in-law Roger, niece Nyeema (Aslam, Huda, Hamedan), nephews Himu (Hina, Nadia, Sidra), Saif and Azhar. Maralyn and the family are deeply grateful for the care and support of Graham Fuchs and Ike's former colleagues the physicians, nurses and ward staff during his final sojourn at Selkirk hospital. Burial has taken place. The family invite friends, colleagues and patients to share memories and celebrate Ike's life at 2:00 p.m. on July 17 at the Selkirk Golf Course. Please respect the golf course dress code (the family notes that Ike wore a tie even to late night emergencies). It was Ike's wish to have any gifts directed to the Selkirk and District Community Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

We were shocked and saddened to read Ike's obituary in today's paper.I was privileged to work with Dr. Hussain for several years at the "old" Selkirk Hospital. He was never too busy to explain various procedures and teach whenever situations arose. I was new as the head nurse on the surgical ward and was fortunate to have Dr. Hussain guide and teach me. His concern for patients and staff was evident every day that he worked. It was an honor to work with him. We are sorry we are unable to attend his memorial service. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. George and Dolena Plews. - Posted by: George and Dolena Plews (friends) on: Jul 12, 2012
