JOSEPH (MARTY) MARTEL December 30, 1949 July 9, 2012 It is with much heartfelt sadness and grief we announce the passing of our devoted husband and father at the Riverview Health Centre on July 9, 2012 with his family by his side. Marty is survived by his loving wife, Gail, his son Kevin (Christine), his daughter, Kristy and his three beautiful grandchildren, Sarah, Greyson and Haiden. Marty was born and raised in Montreal. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1967 and transferred to Winnipeg in 1971. Marty and Gail were married in 1972 and he joined the Winnipeg Fire Department in 1975 where he finished his career as Fire Captain in 2006. Marty had a friendly, easygoing personality and he could always put a smile on anyone's face with his quick wit and sense of humour. He had a passion for music, movies, trivia, crosswords and history. After retirement he enjoyed travelling, cruising, camping with his fifth wheel, and his annual WEfest weekend. Marty was a quiet, unpretentious man devoted to his family and home. In keeping with Marty's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family celebration will be held. The family would like to thank the staff of Riverview for their care and loving assistance. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Friends are welcome to sign the book of condolences at ejcoutu.com Marty will live and be loved forever in our hearts. The Coutu Family in care of arrangements: E.J. Coutu Co. • I sit here numbed at finding Marty's name in the last alarm. He was so full of life. Always was a treat to bump into you folks camping while I was doing my "yogi bear job" as Marty called it. He was one of my mentors and was always quick to find the lighter side of a situation. I am truly sad at our collective loss. Mike - Posted by: mike robson (firefighter, friend) on: Jul 25, 2012

  • My heartfelt condolences to your family during this difficult time. I will always remember swimming in your pool on Juniper Drive, and the quiet kindness you radiated. Thank you for introducing us to the lovely town of Oakbank, where my family grew up, laughed, and loved. May God bless you on your journey - gone, but never forgotten. Gail, Kristy & Kevin - you are in my prayers. - Posted by: Nicole Rondeau () on: Jul 17, 2012

  • I will never forget the time I was washing my boat and had Clint Black playing, Marty gave me a strange look, thinking I was in for a tongue lashing for playing my music too loud, I turned it down, he looked over at me again, and he said "if your going to play that music, please turn it UP!!!!!". Thank you for all your talks, beers, and wisdom, you were a great man. - Posted by: Tommy Hoskins (Friend) on: Jul 16, 2012

  • Marty and I spent many shifts together from downtown to 21 station . Always hard working, kind, but always had a dry sense of humour to throw into the conversation. As a fellow brother and friend I say Good Bye Marty you are in a better place. - Posted by: Bruce Hallmuth (Firefighter) on: Jul 14, 2012
