DR. SUNITA INDERJIT SINGH (BHAGAT) M.B.B.S., M.D., PH.D. 1915 - 2012 Dr. Sunita Inderjit Singh was a fiercely independent, strong, and adventurous woman. She blazed many trails in her day as an extraordinarily successful physician, neurophysiologist, teacher, researcher, tennis player, violinist, sitar player, equestrian, gourmet cook, wife and mother. Dr. Sunita I. Singh was born August 11, 1915 in Campbellpur, India (now part of Pakistan) to Madhu Sudan Bhagat and Sushilla Rani Bhagat. She was the fifth oldest of nine children. She was the loving wife of the late Dr. Inderjit Singh Ph.D. (Cambridge), L.R.C.P. (London) M.R.C.S. (England), M.B.B.S. (Rangoon), F.A.Sc., F.N.I., F.A.M.S., Professor Emeritus, retired Principal, Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology at S. N. Medical College, Agra, India, a renown teacher, researcher and scientist. She was the devoted mother of Amarjit, Kunwarjit, and Rita; caring mother-in-law to Cathy, Veronica, and Sushil; and an affectionate grandmother to Gita, Michael, Anuj, Aarti, Inderjit, Davinder, Meera, and great-grandmother to Henry, Ian, Charlie, and Jemma. She graduated from King Edward Medical College, Lahore in 1938. She was a gold medalist, first in her class in Internal Medicine, and was one of the first female doctors in India. She earned her Ph.D. in Physiology at S. N. Medical College, Agra, India. In 1960 she earned a fellowship to teach and conduct research in the United States. She returned to New Delhi in 1961 and taught Physiology at Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi, India. Later she became the Professor and Head of the Physiology Department at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and the Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology at University Medical College, Delhi. During her career she taught thousands of medical students and published numerous research papers. She was a role model for many of her students and those who knew her. In addition to being an accomplished physician, teacher and researcher, Dr. Singh was also an adept tennis player. She once defeated a Prince of Patiala in a tennis match on his home court. Dr. Singh was a strong, sweet, compassionate and caring lady. She was an exemplary wife, mother and a grandmother. Her wit and clarity of mind followed her to her last days. Her love of medical science even inspired her family as all three of her children and five of her grandchildren entered the field. Dr. Singh died at the age of 96 in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, surrounded by the family she loved. Dr. Singh would have been 97 on August 11, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard.
