WILLIAM (BILL) STENTON LANGDON William Stenton (Bill) Langdon passed away peacefully, on August 14, 2012 following a lengthy illness. Bill was born January 14, 1925 in St. Thomas, Ontario and raised in Langruth, Manitoba, a town his father, George Langdon, founded. He attended United College for grades 11 and 12. He was very proud of having served in all three services: as a sargeant in the Air Force during the war, in the United Naval Training Division during university and in the Winnipeg Light Infantry (Army Reserve) for several years. After graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture in 1949, he married Doreen Beamish, who he fell for while guarding the float she was dancing on during a freshie parade. He worked as a pharmaceutical representative for 39 years, retiring in 1987. Bill was a sprinter on the University of Manitoba track team and evolved to become a lifelong runner and, in latter years, walker. He loved badminton at the Wildewood Club, dancing, socializing and especially golf. Bill and Doreen spent 24 happy winters in Pine to Palm, Weslaco, Texas, with many cherished friends where he played horseshoes, ran the park and played golf. Even at age 85 he walked two miles a day until his stroke in 2011. They spent their summers with the family at Victoria Beach, where he worked constantly on the cottage and loved to golf, socialize with friends and snooze. VB remains a central place for the family. Left to mourn him are his best friend and wife of 62 years, Doreen (née Beamish), son Robert (Jo) and daughters Tannys (Ron Duplack) and Margot (Ross Martin), as well as his grandchildren, Stephen and Andrew Langdon, Pilar Duplack and Riley and Marielle Martin, and his brother Bud Langdon. Special thanks to the caring nurses and staff on the 4th floor at Poseidon Care Centre who were so kind to both Bill and Doreen. Your personal attention and care were much appreciated. A luncheon reception in celebration of Bill's life will be held at 1:00 p.m. this Friday, August 17, 2012 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's name to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba at 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg MB R3C 4G2 or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1101-191 Lombard Ave. Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X1. Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My sincerest comdolences to all the Langdons on the passing of your husband, father and grandfather. He, along with his wife Doreen, were an important part of my early life, especially on Fletcher Crescent, when Tannys and I would spend hours together either in their home or ours two doors down, or during the summers at VB. Mr. Langdon was always cooking up his famous "cat food" dinner for me when I came for a sleepover, after we moved away from the neighbourhood. He was always very generous and warm hearted and I always think fondly of those times. - Posted by: Judith Taylor (friend) on: Aug 29, 2012

  • Sincere condolences to Bill's family and friends. I recall well, Bill's generosity to me while I was but a teenager and the kindness he and his family offered to me through some difficult times in my own life. The trips out of town when Bill would shuttle our band about to places such as Langruth and Glenboro are stuff great memories are made of. Rest in peace Bill. • My condolences to the Langdon family who have lost husband, dad and granddad. Bill together with Doreen raised talented and generous children, and created a fun-loving, spirited and loyal family. I was privileged to be included in many family dinners at the lake during which Bill always had funny stories and groan-inducing puns. He was at the centre of so much laughter. I would be at VB with Margot, but Bill and I often shared a common meal while everyone else was out. He would make his lunch after his run, and I'd be having breakfast. He had a healthy combination of broth, oatmeal, dried onion flakes, garlic and any ingredients that inspired him while I was scarfing cinnamon buns. Bill was great at the Freep's "Jumbles" and taught me his strategy. I treasure those memories. - Posted by: Sherry Wiebe (Family Friend) on: Aug 17, 2012
