DORIS MARKWART (nee SUSANNA PETERS) Doris, aged 94 years passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 after a brave battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her husband, Herb and son, Russell. She is survived by her sister Billy Plohman of Ashern; her daughter, June (Susan) of Edmonton; and son Roy (Elaine) of East Selkirk. Doris's pride and joy was being a grandmother and great-grandmother to granddaughters Jade (Clint) Vinet (deceased), Sarah (Kyle) Wass, Rebekah (Ed) Taylor and grandson Adam Markwart; and great-grandchildren Eric Markwart; Ava and Isaac Wass; and Ashton and Ella Vinet. Born and raised in Lowe Farm, Manitoba, she was a farmer's daughter who had a knack for mischief, laughter and good times. She regaled generations of family with stories from her youth; climbing trees, horse and cutter races, barn dances and baseball games, always concluding that they played and worked hard. Mother had a zest for life. Her passions were reading, curling, music, dancing, laughter with friends and family balanced with a pursuit of excellence in her careers and in tending her home and garden. Her accomplishments were numerous: graduating from beauty school in 1945, she was an accomplished hairdresser who demonstrated the Tony for the Queen during her 1950's tour; in 1975 she obtained her Grade 12 diploma and later her real estate license. She was a determined person who made numerous contributions to the communities she lived in. The values she fostered guide us in our lives: work hard; enjoy life; take advantage of opportunities, be honest and have consideration of others. Her random acts of kindness for strangers made us all proud. Mother had a keen interest in the world, great sense of humour and a teasing nature. She had the courage and tenacity to achieve in life, education, and career in times when it was not fashionable for women to do so. Although, we celebrate her life and will value our memories, she will be missed. At her request, there will be no public service. The family asks that donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.
