DANIEL LOUIS PATZER September 14, 1919 - September 7, 2012 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather (Papa), great-grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Dad passed away peacefully, leaving us with mixed emotions; mourning his passing while at the same time celebrating what he has wanted for such a long time ... to be reunited with his beloved wife, Herta, and the Lord. Dad is survived by his sons, Larry (Norma), Herbert (Donna), daughter, Linda Gsols (Peter); grandchildren: Andrea Toth (Francis), Brett Patzer, Jarrod Patzer (Rachelle), Andrew Patzer (Adria), Kristy Chapman (Chad), Matthew Patzer (Angie), Lea Pawloski (Kenny), Rachel Hawryluk (Ryan), and James Gsols; great-grandchildren: Christopher, Brady, Tanner, Rylan, Kalli, Ashleigh, Ethan, Jack, Van, Daniel, Gabriel, Calleigh, Cadence, Sofia, Leah, and Kanen. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Ernest Beck, Gerry Beck (Bev); sisters-in-law: Liz Patzer, Ruth Haberman (Walter), and Linda Beck plus numerous nieces and nephews. Dad was predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Rosalie Patzer and siblings: Leonard, Edith, Huldina (died in infancy), Lena, Arthur (age nine), Elizza, Anne, Herman (Harry), Helen, Harold plus Gottlieb and Ottilia (who died in infancy); and two great-grandchildren Joshua and Isabella. Dad was born and raised in Thalberg, Manitoba. There he attended school near the family farm and the Thalberg Lutheran Church. He grew up learning that faith and family were the cornerstones of a man's life. Among the favourite memories that he would talk about were cleaning the school with his sister Lena, his team of horses that he swore still knew him when he returned home from five years overseas following the Second World War, and the first time he laid eyes on mom, on her first visit to the family farm. When the Second World War came, Dad joined the army and proudly served five years as a member of the 12th Manitoba Dragoons, most of it overseas in England, Holland, Belgium, and France. Although, like many returning soldiers, he didn't tell many stories, but he cherished his memories and the bonds he had made with other members of his unit. Family was very important to dad. In the early years he enjoyed camping with the family, hunting with the boys and pointing out that his daughter was a nurse. Dad was also excited to see and hear from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always having candies somewhere around the house or in his pockets, and they knew it. Dad loved to have friends and relatives come to visit as well, especially if it meant a rousing game of cards. Lastly, Dad loved his church, Peace Lutheran. He cherished Pastor Brad's visits as not only would he get a visit and communion but Pastor always brought a fresh Tim's coffee. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 14, at 11:00 a.m. in the Peace Lutheran Church, 350 Gilmore Ave., Winnipeg, with Pastor Brad Schollenberg officiating. Viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Selkirk Lutheran Cemetery. The family would like to express our appreciation to the staff at Red River Place Personal Care Home for their kindness to Dad during his time there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief or Peace Lutheran Church. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
