Born: Jan 27, 1945
Date of Passing: Sep 18, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELEN EDNA GAVEL (nee THACKER) January 27, 1945 September 18, 2012 After a long battle with cancer (Multiple Myeloma), it is great with great sadness we announce the passing of Helen Edna Gavel. Her three daughters Christine, Wendy and Karen were at her bedside as she departed this world to join her late husband Arnold who passed away in June 2011. Helen is survived by her three daughters Christine Laura Gavel, Wendy Arlene (Charles) Thomas; Karen Penny Gavel (John) Pitsanuk; grandchildren Megan Rose, Heather Elizabeth, Joseph John and Ethan Charles Arnold, brother James William Thacker and his wife Gabrielle; brothers and sisters-in-law Budd, Edward, John, Allister, Kenneth, Carroll, Jane, Charles, Brenda, Leo, Cathy, Mary and her very best friends Linda Loewen and Karen Ross. Helen and Arnold were married on June 4, 1965 and were the definition of soul mates. They were devoted to each other and their children; the envy of everyone who knew them. This devotion to each other was reflected in everything they did, including building and expanding their business, Westcan Hydraulic Lines (1974) Ltd., into one of the most successful hydraulic lines businesses in Winnipeg. Helen's childhood love of horses followed her into adulthood where she became a member of the executive council for Agassiz Arabian Horse Association and Manitoba Horse Council. Her love of horses was reflected in her encouragement of daughters Wendy and Karen to compete in Arabian Horse shows; making horse shows a part of the family tradition. Helen's warm and magnetic personality created lifelong friendships that will be greatly missed by friends and family alike. Her demeanor and approach to problems have enhanced her daughters' lives and they are so grateful for her parental guidance. She was indeed the perfect mom. Helen was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in October 2011. She planned to participate in the 2012 Multiple Myeloma March on September 23, 2012. She and her daughters were appreciative of the support they received from the Multiple Myeloma group at CancerCare Manitoba. We would like to thank CancerCare Manitoba, especially Dr. Ade Olujohungbe, Elizabeth Agnew and Tom Roach; Health Sciences Centre and the staff on D4, Dr. Renelle Myers and Dr. Timothy Hiebert. Their professionalism and compassion went above and beyond expectations. In lieu of flowers we would appreciate you sending a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, and in Helen's words, With the hope they can get it right one day. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, September 24, 2012, at Klassen Funeral Home, 1897 Henderson Hwy. Arrangements entrusted to: KLASSEN FUNERAL HOME 1897 Henderson Hwy. - 338-0331 Condolences may be sent to www.klassenfuneralhome.com

I remember me and Helen watching lightning storms and chasing them on at least two occasions and Arnold calling us fools. We also discussed the trip her and Arnold took to the lightning farm in Nevada, very interesting and she was very interesting and one of the smartest people I know. We had that interest and others in common and Helen and I also shared many laughs and planted many trees and stacked a lot of hay and I learned a little about horses from Helen and Arnold. I remember the two of us drinking so much of her potent coffee on one Christmas morning it was like we were drunk and we laughed at things no one else thought was funny. I remember times we hugged and I remember times we cried, I remember her cranky, I remember her silly and I remember times she was so happy and I remember it was with Arnold. I hope they will be together to share that happiness together again now she has passed. It is said a good woman is like a priceless pearl in fact Helen was a handful of pearls and is one for each of her daughters. I’m so sorry Chris, Wendy and Karen, so sorry to all who has lost Helen, but we all will remember Helen and Arnold always. Always with love Irv and Del. - Posted by: Irven and Delores Gavel (Nefpew) on: Sep 24, 2012

Helen was such a kind, warm hearted person and always made you feel right at home. She and Arnold loved to travel, laugh and loved to watch their girl's grow into beautiful, lovely ladies. Helen and Arnold were so proud of their girl's and their grandchildren and often said what more could you ask for in life than the love of your partner and the love of your children. - Posted by: Leo and Cindy Gavel (Sister-in-law) on: Sep 23, 2012
