GUENTER HOFFMANN With his family at his side, Guenter Hoffmann passed away peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre on October 31, 2012. Dad leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 59 years, Renate; his children, Ilona (Tom), Harold (Marlene), Ron (Andrea), and Gord; his granddaughters Shaylyn, Elise, and Ingrid; a number of relatives in Germany, and his adored cats. Dad was predeceased by his granddaughter, Chelsea. Dad was born in Lower Silesia, Germany on March 11, 1923. Like others of his generation, Dad's life was deeply affected by war. The tumult of 20th century history saw him serve as a soldier, and then suffer as a prisoner of war. In 1952 he started a new life in Canada, arriving without speaking English, without knowing anyone, and with only 30 dollars in his pocket. His wife to be, Renate Schulz, joined him a year later where they settled in Winnipeg. Dad worked for Dominion Tanners for 34 years, retiring as the foreman of the drying department in 1986. Dad's sense of adventure, his optimism, kindness, and commitment to decency and fairness were part of his core being. He had a sense of humour and a permanent twinkle in his eye. Although money was tight he ensured that his children would have the educational opportunities he never had. Dad was self-educated and knowledgeable in many areas, revealing a lively curiosity which shaped his personality and his approach to life. He was profoundly proud that all his children earned university degrees. He had a generous and caring spirit which he applied to animals, especially the many cats he had over the years, all of them homeless strays. He took them in and they became cherished members of the household. Above all, Dad was devoted to his family and he did everything he could to help and support us. Dad was the family patriarch and the anchor. He was our counsellor and advisor. We didn't tell Dad enough of how proud we were of him. In recent years, with declining health of Mom, Dad became the grocery shopper, the care provider, and quite a cook. He never wavered from family responsibility. Dad also never failed to meet life's challenges with a fighting spirit. He beat cancer twice. He never lost his optimism and love of life throughout the ups and downs he encountered. We all hope we share in that spirit. Dad was an inspiration and we'll miss him dearly. A private family memorial will be held to celebrate his life. Should friends so desire, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society. I only had the pleasure of meeting Guenther a few months ago and I have to agree with everything the family has said in this write up --- Guenther was a man with high morals and he loved his family dearly. I was blessed to have had the opportunity to have some heart to heart chit chats with Guenther every week for the last few months. He had a heart of gold. I also did have the honor of seeing that "twinkle" in his eyes! My deepest condolences to the entire family. - Posted by: Joanne Perron (Friend with a helping hand) on: Nov 03, 2012
