MICHAEL JOHN BARAGAR September 21, 1931 November 2, 2012 Suddenly, on November 2, 2012, Michael John Baragar died - at home, as he would have wanted it. He leaves in sadness his beloved wife, Joan, his children, Susan (Mark), Scott (Cathy) and Mark (Erin) - also stepchildren Jennifer, Janet, Keith (Kathy), and Kathryn (Joe). He leaves his sister Margaret (Peggy) and his brother Fletcher. Michael was predeceased by his son Drew in 1988, his first wife, Mary-Lou in 1985, and both his parents. Joan and Michael rejoiced in 11 grandchildren: Amelia, Diego, Rapha, Daniel, Nico, Jonathon, Shane, Hannah, Alex, Emma and Angus. There are also two great-grandchildren: Danyka and Ava. Michael was born in Winnipeg to Fred and Edith Baragar, the youngest brother of Margaret (Peggy) and Fletcher Baragar. The family introduced him to cottage life at Winnitoba, which nourished his education in many ways and introduced a lifelong love of lake and forest. Michael graduated from Kelvin School and attended the Universities of Winnipeg (United College) and Manitoba. He graduated in 1955 with a BSc. in Chemistry, Microbiology and Math. Throughout his career, he held positions in the chemical industry in Quebec and Manitoba - and ultimately became District Manager at what is now Brenntag, a position he enjoyed for 20 years. He also helped develop innovations in the industry. As his family grew up, he also supported his children in swimming and skating activities, and in Cubs and Scouts. He took justifiable pride in his tenure as Chairman of the Winnipeg School Board in the 1970s. He was instrumental in introducing French Immersion to Winnipeg schools. On July 18, 1990, Michael married Joan and they lived with young Mark and a golden retriever named Skye in River Heights. After retirement, Michael remained a consultant for several years. He also mastered an ambitious retirement project: building a beautiful new cottage overlooking Willard Lake, Ontario. It was a creation of love and skill, which is now one of his legacies. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2008, and dealt with its debilitating effects with stubborn determination and grace for the rest of his life. He was a man of noble spirit. In accordance with Michael's wishes cremation will take place and a private memorial service will be held with Rev. Don Ross officiating. Thanks to the many friends who continued to see Michael as a whole person and respond to him with appreciation and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations in Michael's name may be made to the Parkinson's Society of Canada. E-mail: general.info@parkinson.ca. • Our deepest sympathies to the family. Mark, we are so sorry for the loss of your father. We will be thinking of you in your time of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family. - Posted by: Doug & Louise Hardy (Acquaintance ) on: Nov 07, 2012

  • My thoughts are with the Baragar family. Mr. Baragar was my first boss at Stanchem. He had great wit and was a great leader for the company. Always concerned and thinking about his staff. I can remember one year he treated us all to a night at "theatre in the park" in Kildonan Park. "Brigadoon" was the show. I will never forget that. So thoughtful and kind. So sorry to hear he has passed. He was a great man. - Posted by: Denise (Employee of stanched) on: Nov 07, 2012

  • Our condolences to the family on behalf of the teacher-librarians in Winnipeg School Divison, who appreciated Mr. Baragar's support on many important projects, including school library services in the Immersion Schools. We could always count on his leadership, and his clear strong voice. He was a good friend too. Gerald R. Brown, Chief Librarian (Retired) Winnipeg School Division - Posted by: Gerald R. Brown (Work Colleague in Winnipeg School Division) on: Nov 07, 2012
