HAROLD DECKERT 1923 - 2012 We are saddened to announce the passing of our father, Harold, at the Deer Lodge Centre on November 28, 2012. Dad was born in Transcona on June 5, 1923 to Emil (carpenter) and Lydia Deckert (Layman). He had six siblings, Arthur, Edmond, Edna (twin), Olga, Elsie, and Reinhold. He attended Central School where his children and several grandchildren followed. Harold enlisted in the army when he was 20 and was decorated during the Second World War. After being discharged from the army, he took a tailoring course and was employed by J. Norris and Sons. He later became a carman with the C.N.R. until his retirement. In retirement, he enjoyed fishing and spending time in his backyard garden, which was his primary passion. He was a keen card player and enjoyed playing during coffee breaks at Symington Yards and at home with his wife Olga and the neighbours. Harold and Olga enjoyed many trips across Canada and the United States (especially Texas in later years). He was a long-time member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd of which he was a founding member. Harold will be greatly missed by his son, Mervin (Colleen), daughter Judith (Jim), seven grandchildren as well as his nine great-grandchildren. The loss of his wife Olga on March 31, 2002 was difficult for him. He cared for her throughout the years of her illness and was loving and attentive to her needs. Harold lived independently at home on Kildare for many years. He taught us all the value of an education, hard work, honesty, integrity, and of course frugality. The family would like to thank Arlis and the staff of ward T3 of Deer Lodge Centre for their care and compassion during dad's stay. There will be a private family interment and celebration of dad's life at a later date. Funeral Arrangements in Care of Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery Crematorium 1800 Day Street (204) 224-1525
