VICTOR JOSEPH WESELAK November 7, 1939 - December 19, 2012 With great sadness we announce the passing of Victor Weselak, after a brief battle with brain cancer. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 48 years, Joan, his son David, grandsons Caeden, Talon, Eben (Winnipeg) and Merrick (Ottawa). He was predeceased by his oldest son Kevin in 2011. Also remembering him with love is brother Ed (Lesley), nieces Jackie, Jennifer, Jill and Lindsay. Vic was born in Strathclair Municipality, MB and lived in the area until the family moved to Winnipeg in 1951. He attended General Byng, Viscount Alexander (Winnipeg), and Notre Dame College in Wilcox, SK. Vic began work as a land surveyor, with Bayne and Hyde. In 1964, he joined the Provincial Government of Manitoba Highways Department, eventually becoming Manager of Special Operations. He was affectionately known as "Perimeter Vic". Retiring in 2003, Vic was called back to work, (summers of 2011 and 2012) because of the flooding in St. Laurent, and worked up to a few days prior to his illness. Vic was a Level 4 hockey coach, coaching Community Club Hockey and Twins AA for 15 years. Having a natural musical gift, he began playing drums with Ben Jones in 1967. They played at Folkorama, did a cancer benefit at the Concert Hall, for which they had a standing ovation (Vic was very humbled by this) and they recorded a song which made them top 10 in Jamaica. He also drummed with Glen Power for the 1967 Manitoba Centennial, creating the song, "Going back to Manitoba". He loved playing the harmonica and the banjo. Vic loved nature, and the family spent many summers camping and fishing in the Rockies. He played softball and hockey, ending with the oldtimers Dirty Dozen . Vic and Joan were snowbirds, happily spending many winters in Mission, TX. He would mimic the call of a loon to signal happy hour . A humble, but outgoing man with a quirky sense of humour, Vic was also a loving, protective husband, a very proud father, and a committed, dedicated worker. A friend to all, he will be missed by many. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2012 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 4588 Roblin Boulevard. Donations may be made in Vic's name to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9C9. THOMSON IN THE PARK 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • Dear Joan and family I was saddened to hear of your loss of Vic. Time seems to rush by and in spite of that I still have fond memories of Vic's time at Bayne and Hyde and Wilson Neal and Hayward. I was fortunate in having the opportunity to work with Vic in those years and was so pleased that he took the opportunity at Highways and did so well there. While I did not see him very often our paths crossed occasionally and I was able to watch his progress after I left the firm to work for Manitoba Surveys and later Red River Community College. I remember getting a phone call from him in his early days at Highways with regard to the procedures to lay out the curves on his first run at surveying an interchange on the Perimeter. I went through the procedure with him and when I met him accidentally some time later we had a good laugh about his still being employed by Highways. I wish you and yours peace in this trying time and comfort in your many good memories of Vic. - Posted by: Allan L Hayward (Former employer and co-worker) on: Dec 27, 2012
