GERALDINE ELLEN KEARNS (nee PHILLIPS) May 5, 1942 - December 26, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. After a courageous battle with cancer, Geraldine passed away surrounded in body and spirit by her family who loved her dearly. Geraldine was born in Montreal, Quebec, a daughter of the late Edgar and Marie Phillips. She was raised in Verdun and was very proud of her roots and large extended family. Upon marrying Lorne in 1963, they moved to LaSalle, and later began raising their children in Otterburn Park and Pointe Claire. In 1983, a short term assignment in Winnipeg for Lorne began, and it turned into a permanent move for the family. As her love for Winnipeg grew over the years, her fondness for Montreal stayed strong through memories of family, many friends and good times. Geraldine worked as a school teacher before staying home to raise her family. She later returned to the world of early childhood education for several years prior to retirement in 1997. Throughout her time in Winnipeg, she was an active volunteer at St. Ignatius church. Reading, participating in a Friends of the Library bookclub, and playing bridge were regular activities in retirement. She was always eager for a singsong or a get together with her gal pals. Geraldine enjoyed her sweets and liked to explore every pastry shop in town. Family dinners were never complete without an array of desserts. Those who knew her well and those who just met her knew that Geraldine was never at a loss for words. You could always count on her to keep the conversation going. Geraldine will be lovingly remembered by her husband Lorne of 50 years, her daughters Kathleen (Gary) Kearns-Rodgers, Patricia (Jordan) Kearns-McPeek, her grandchildren Margot, Keely, Garrett, and Sean, her greatest joy in later years, and her sister Norma Phillips. Family was the most important thing to Geraldine and her eyes would light up whenever we were together. Geraldine will be greatly missed and we will always remember the gentle ways she performed her role as the guiding light of our family. We would like to thank the entire staff of GA4 at Health Sciences Centre as well as the palliative care team for their excellent care and compassion. A special thanks to Dr. Michelle Evans, whose care, compassion and friendship made a difficult time more bearable. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Ave. Winnipeg, Manitoba, Father Sam Argenziano officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
