CHARLES EDWARD MURRAY TISDALE 1935 - 2013 Murray, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend. Murray passed away on January 6, 2013 (age 77) at the St. Boniface Hospital after hard-fought battles with lung disease, heart failure, and numerous other conditions. Murray was predeceased by his father Charles in 1946, his mother Honoria in 1998, and the love of his life, his wife Joan in 2001. Murray will be forever loved and remembered by his sons Jim and Doug, daughter-in-law Heather, and granddaughter Lauren, the light of his life. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Lenore Bridge (Don), brother-in-law Robert Millar (Donna), and nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Close to his heart were his "special granddaughters" Tristen, Ashton, Cheryl and Katherine. Murray will be lovingly remembered by his lifelong friends Ed and Wilma Wise. Murray was born on April 25, 1935, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he resided his entire life. He attended St. Paul's High School, where he played offensive lineman on the football team. He married Helen Joan Millar on September 24, 1955, and they spent 46 wonderful years together. Murray worked for a short time at the Hudson Bay Company and at the Great West Life Assurance Company. He then began his long career with the Canadian National Railroad and Via Rail Canada, where he worked for a combined 33 years. Some of his time at Via Rail was spent escorting railway tours across Canada and into the United States. He was one of Via's most popular and well-liked tour escorts, and received glowing reviews from his customers. After retiring in 1988, Murray worked for H&R block for several years and continued his association with Via Rail until 2011 by volunteering at the Via Children's Christmas parties. Dad loved sports and was a season ticket holder for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for 40 years. He became deeply involved in amateur football in Manitoba, and was extremely proud of the award that he received for his contributions. He was also a big hockey fan, and loved watching the Winnipeg Jets and Canadian junior hockey. In his younger days Dad enjoyed golf and curling. Dad loved to spend time at the family cottage at Whytewold. He enjoyed travelling, particularly a trip to Britain and Ireland with his family in 1996. Above all, he loved to spend time with his family and friends. Murray was beloved by all who knew him, and he brightened countless lives. He delighted in making people laugh and, while his jokes often led to affectionate eye rolling, he always made you smile. He was kind, decent, gentle, generous, caring, and a devoted family man. He will be loved, missed, and remembered forever by all who knew him. Our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses, other health care professionals, and all the staff at the Emergency Department and on the 6th floor at St. Boniface Hospital for your compassion and the skilled care that you provided to Dad. A memorial service to celebrate Murray's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 12 at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Canadian Lung Association, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. • In my early working years, I curled with the CNR league with my Dad (Dan Gilmore) and Murray. I was a learner curler and not that great either! Murray had the patience of Jobe with me and with his coaching and guidance I began to love the game and steadily improved! My sincerest condolences to the Tisdale family with the loss of a wonderful caring man! - Posted by: Linda Sloane( Fraser/Gilmore) (Culer on Murray team with CNR) on: Jan 10, 2013

  • I had the pleasure of knowing Murray (who will affectionately remain "Mr. Tisdale" to me) for a long time thanks to my 30+ year friendship with Doug. Mr. Tisdale always made me, and everyone else, feel welcome and perfectly at home. I remember that he enjoyed good company, a good joke (it is true that some were better than others:-) and that he was a very gracious host. Doug and Jim, Jill and I are very sorry you have lost your dad. He would have been very proud as both a father and grandfather. Hopefully the Bombers will bring the Cup home for him soon! - Posted by: Rob Cooper (Long time friend of son, Doug) on: Jan 10, 2013

  • Murray and his mom lived with us on Arlington St. many years ago. Fond memories of that time. - Posted by: Veronica Lysak (Mulgrew) (friend) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • Murray and Joan played a big part in our household. They took care of my children when they were infants and up to their early teens. Many of the traits they have were nurtured by Murray and Joan. They lived right next door to us. They looked out for us and we of them. One of the many great memories is when the girls and I would build the snow slides which crossed our yard into theirs. One evening when Murray came home from working at Sears H and R Block, he saw us outside on crazy carpets going down the snow slide. He was all dressed up in his work suit and dress shoes but he put down his briefcase and came over. He said he wanted to go down the slide. We said he was too nicely dressed for that, but he did not care. We helped him on a crazy carpet and down he went. We were so amazed and the girls were so happy that he made it down without crashing into the tree. He was a wonderful man, we will all miss him. - Posted by: Kim freund (Tristen and Ashton's mom) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • Although we regretfully never had an opportunity to meet Murray in person, we feel that we know him well. The description of his life captured what we already knew, just by knowing both Doug and Jim as brothers and individuals. We can picture how Murray's gracious attitude could make people smile that were fortunate enough to be in his life. We continue to benefit and are forever grateful to know both Doug and Jim. Therefore, we will be forever indebted to Murray and the wonderful way in which he lived his life. - Posted by: Brian Overholser and Jill Wohlford () on: Jan 09, 2013
