CRAIG (COOKIE) GILCHRIST June 16, 1944 January 6, 2013 Peacefully on January 6, 2013 our beloved Craig passed away at his residence. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 45 years, Linda, children; Kendra, Alexander (Denise), grandchildren; Mackenzie and Summer Gilchrist, sisters Gail Franklin and Joanne (Al) Sutherland, sister-in-law Cheryl Cottrell (Amador), as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Craig was a third generation union employee at MTS and worked there until his retirement in 1996. Upon his retirement, Craig enjoyed many trips to Portugal, travelling to junior hockey games across Canada, and visiting with friends and relatives. Craig was very proud of his children and daughter-in-law. His greatest regret was leaving his precious grandchildren. A special thank you to Dr. Mayba, and all who phoned and visited, and to nephews David and Russell for their personal service during his illness. It was Craig's wish that his body be donated to the University of Manitoba Department of Anatomy for medical research. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations in memory of Craig may be made to the Manitoba Lung Association. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU CO. • Linda what a shock it was today to receive this message. Linda, Alex Kendra and families we know your precious husband, father and grandfather will be missed by you all. Just know our hearts and thoughts will be with you on Saturday. To share a life Story it was your precious Craig that took me to the hospital before my delivery of Trevor, pretending to be the dad till Jack arrived. We will never forget that kind and generous man's actions and often would talk and laugh about it. Me saying Craig get out of here and him telling the doctor I was just delirious not to mind me. The doctor carried on as if I did not exist but the father (being Craig) did lol..a precious memory for our family. Rest in Peace our dear friend. We will not be able to be with you on Saturday as all four of us are not in Canada. I will be in touch with you from Thailand next week. When you have time send me a quick email telling me what would be a good time. Love you Linda hugs Marilyn - Posted by: Marilyn Ken Terry & Trevor (Old Friends and neighbours) on: Jan 10, 2013

  • I will always remember Craig as the fellow who always had a smile on his face, even in an argument. We were always friends and my one regret is that I did not spend more time with him. My thoughts are with you Linda, and your family. I am sorry that I cannot be there at this time as I am out of the country. My sincere condolences. I know that Craig was not a God fearing person but I will say a few prayers for him just the same...Ken (Jack) - Posted by: Ken (Jack) Ewanochko (Friend and one time neighbour) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • One of my best memories of Uncle Craig is when I was about thirteen or fourteen, cutting the grass at my grandmother’s place. My mom was inside visiting, and Craig was patiently listening to me complain about my brother who had cut the cord on the lawn mower last time. I was complaining how stupid he could be to cut the cord. Craig started laughing; I asked him what was funny. He could hardly spit it out, he was laughing so hard. He said “He can't be that dumb, he isn't here cutting the grass, is he?" Craig was one of the uncles who, for me, helped to fill in the parenting gaps left by my father's illness. From Craig, I learned to value education and critical, independent thought. I'm thankful for his influence on my life, and on the great support he (and Linda, and Alex, and Kendra) lent to our family. Love Dave - Posted by: David Franklin (Nephew) on: Jan 09, 2013
