GUNNSTEIN HALLDOR MAGNUSSON It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gunnstein Halldor Magnusson on January 11, 2013, at the Arborg Hospital after a short illness. Gunni was born on November 12, 1923. He is predeceased by parents Jon and Raenka, and siblings Steini, Inga, Albert, Rosa, Asta, Johannes, Lillo and Helga. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Gunni grew up in Magnusville and worked for over forty years with his brothers Steini and Johannes at "The Mink Ranch." Retirement from mink ranching brought Gunni a slower pace and an enjoyment of a quiet lifestyle, focused on friends and family. Gunni, always unassuming, was a kind and gentle man who thought the best of others and would never utter an unkind word. He was loved and admired by a large circle of family, friends and acquaintances who beat a steady path to his door. Gunni had a way of making everyone feel welcome in his home through his gift of time and attention; the coffee pot was always on. Kaffi timi at Gunni's was entertaining and a forum to solve the world's problems. Gunni had an astonishing capacity to keep abreast of local and global events, and he entertained guests with his perspective and dry humour. During the summers and Icelandic Festival weekend, Gunni's home was an active hub for visiting family. Gunni valued family ties and stayed in touch by phone with family all across Canada and the United States. Gunni's discerning eye, thoughtful ways, and integrity were well known in the community and in the fur industry. Gunni's ability to select superior mink stock resulted in repeated 1st place awards for The Swan Fur farm during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The same pride and careful consideration extended to the care of his home and yard. Seeing Gunni "carefully" cutting grass on his tractor lawnmower will be a sight sadly missed. All had great respect for Gunni and his kind-hearted ways. He was always willing to help others. Along with the humans, the neighbourhood animals loved him and visited for treats. When, in later years, his mobility was restricted, he accepted these changes with dignity and grace. Gunni was appreciative of the Home Care nurses Jody, Judy and Sheila who attended to him with devotion and allowed him to continue living in his home. A special thanks is extended to Boyd and Corrine Magnusson who supported Gunni's independence over the years with shopping, transportation to medical appointments and daily visits. Gunni's family acknowledges the staff at the Arborg Hospital for their excellent care during the last few weeks and the long term care provided by Dr. Heyday. Arrangements have been entrusted to Gilbart Funeral Chapels in Selkirk and cremation has taken place. In keeping with Gunni's wishes, a celebration of Gunni's life will take place during the 2013 Icelandic Festival weekend. Those wishing to make a donation in Gunni's honour may do so through the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation or a charity of their choice. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
