SISTER IRENE GAGNON, S.G.M. 1919 - 2013 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Sister Irène Gagnon on 23 January, 2013, at the age of 93 and 70 of religious life. She was surrounded by a Grey Nun companion and the personnel of 3DE. Born in South Junction, July first, 1919 to Cédulie Bédard and Welly Gagnon, Irène was the ninth in a family of 15 children. Being part of a large French Canadian family, Irène soon experienced the importance and the challenges of community life. At a tender age she learned to listen, to share and to live in harmony with people of different ideas and characteristics. Graced with such virtues and natural qualities, she knocks at the novitiate of the Grey Nuns in St. Boniface in February 1941 to pursue her religious formation, and later, at the Mother House in Montreal, she sealed her consecration with final vows on February 15, 1947. It was in the fall of 1944 that her teaching career began in La Broquerie. Later Sister Irène went to Ste Anne-des-Chêne, Fort Providence, Northwest Territories, St. Michael, North Dakota, Berens and Woodridge in Manitoba. Along with her regular teaching, Sister firstly improved her teaching of Catechism and later pursued her studies at the University of Manitoba where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in 1970. In her humble ways, it's with courage, obedience and love that she devoted herself to the young people entrusted to her care. At one point, it became evident that a few students needed help because of poor eyesight. Sister Irène willing agreed to take study braille in Grand Forks. Back home, she relentlessly devoted herself for the young blind, especially young Martin. When she resigned from this position some eight years later, Martin's Mom wrote: "Sister Gagnon devoted herself body and soul for the little fellow. I'm aware of the numerous hours she spent preparing material in braille, the many hours she dedicated to preparing his Catechism book each year, in addition to the many books she prepared for him every year. I thank Sister Gagnon for the beautiful educational work she did for Martin...She took the time to explain his school subjects, but above all, I thank her for helping Martin to accept his handicap, and to give him a sense of worth as a person. Her influence on his life has been evident." Sister Irène will be remembered as a woman of profound trust in the Lord with whom she loved to spend time, and meditate on the rosary. She is a woman who lived simply, contented with the bare minimum and never demanding. A few days before dying she confided to a companion: "There is nothing worthwhile anymore, God alone lives on." Sister Gagnon was a very thankful person. The word thank you was spontaneous, and always with a broad smile. She was also a person of peace. Any criticism, blame or lack of charity vanished in her presence. She would respond with a word of wisdom that outshone the worldly speech and gently reminded the beauty of God's love. Besides her religious family, Sister Irène Gagnon leaves to mourn two sisters, Stella Brisebois and Antoinette D'Hully, two sisters-in-law Eileen and Rose and many nephews, nieces, former students, parents and friends. The Grey Nuns wish to express their sincere sympathies to the families saddened by her passing; to thank in a special way the staff at 3DE at Actionmarguerite for their care and thoughtfulness towards Sister Irène, and all persons who have accompanied our dear Sister especially during her last illness. The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Irène Gagnon will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Monday, January 28, 2013 at the chapel in Despins Residence, at 151 Despins Street in St. Boniface, preceded by viewing at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery on Archibald Street. • I love my Aunty Cecile...I wish I knew her longer but I guess I was graced with the short time we had.... She was an awesome lady that taught me so many things.....Very blessed to have her in my life, not many people get the opportunity to meet, let alone be related to such an outstanding person.......can't wait to see her again...<3 - Posted by: Monique Hazzard (Neice through Stella) on: Dec 09, 2014

  • My memories of her were good. When I first met her, she scared me with her eyes; they were so intense, round and blue. She loved children and playing little pranks. Our family visited her in North Dakota and she instructed her school children to sing "Good Morning to You". I was surprised and touched by that warm welcome. She also wanted me to write the song "6 Little Ducks" on her classroom chaulk board so that she could teach her children how to sing it and make the moves to it. She always made us feel welcome. RIP, Sister Irene. Love you... Thanks for the good memories. xxoo - Posted by: Rose Marie Gagnon (Niece) on: Sep 01, 2014

  • Rest well Matante Cecile you have given a great deal of Kindness and Love to many. I have always smiled when I thought of you and Matante Alice and I can hear the laughter from above already. I agree with Louise the Obit is very well written. Thank you to the writer. - Posted by: Gabriel et Claudette Nault (nee Gagnon) (niece) on: Feb 19, 2013

  • How could I forget about Soeur Gagnon? She was in my class every day helping Martin with his homework and braille. She was really part of our class from grade 1 all the way to grade 12 at École Pointe des Chenes in Ste-Anne. What a wonderful person and just simple great memories. She did a lot for Martin and she also taught us about empathy without judging anyone... we were just kids and she understood that. - Posted by: REMI LEMOINE (MARTIN'S CLASSMATE) on: Feb 14, 2013

  • How awesome it is that Auntie Irene is with the Lord - She always remembered us, by name, knew each and every family member. What a blessing and uplifting lady. She always remembered the best of everyone and we never left without her saying "I'll be praying for you and the family". As an angel now, I know she will still guide us. God's Blessing to all! - Posted by: Denny & Clyde (Claudette) D'Heilly (Niece) on: Jan 31, 2013

  • Sr. Gagnon taught me so much about the love of Jesus. It was so special to meet her again as a candidate for the Grey Nuns and to have her prayers throughout my formation. She will be missed, - Posted by: Laura Sweeney (Student, former sister in community) on: Jan 30, 2013

  • Aunty Cecile (that is how we always knew her) meant a lot to us and we will miss her terribly but she has gone to be with her Lord, which was very important to her. We have many wonderful memories of her which we will forever cherish. Thank you to whoever wrote the obituary because it was a wonderful tribute to the person we knew and loved so dearly. Rest in peace ma tane, until we meet again. - Posted by: Louise and Jamie Nichol (Neice) on: Jan 29, 2013

  • Aunty Irene was a wonderful, kind person who will forever remain in our hearts. She never forgot a birthday or special day and got such joy at the least sign of kindness shown to her. She had a special connection with children and could calm down even the most boisterous. She kept up with the times and was amazed when niece Louise and husband, Jamie videotaped her this past summer to show sister Stella and then returned later that same day with a video of Stella saying "hello" back. It made the distance between them disappear. Thank you to all who cared for her. - Posted by: Fred, Kelly and family (Nephew) on: Jan 27, 2013

  • She always reminded me to do the little things because they mattered and it was the best way to love God. - Posted by: Denis Gagnon (Nephew) on: Jan 26, 2013
