LUCIA MARIA MANTEUFFEL
Date of Passing: Feb 24, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLUCIA MARIA MANTEUFFEL It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness we announce the passing of Lucy Manteuffel peacefully on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the age of 92. Lucy was predeceased by her loving husband Andrzej in 1965 and her grandson Ryan in 1977. She is survived by her daughter Anna (Lewis) Egan, her son Rick (Cindy) Manteuffel, her grandchildren Chris (Shelley) Egan, Cailin (Adam) Hodder, Kerri (Wayne) Raghuveer, Erin Egan, Laura (Mike) Manastyr, Sarah Manteuffel, and great-granddaughter Kaleigh Hodder. Babcia was born in Starogard, Poland to Antoni Czerski and Anna Czerska. She completed her teacher's education and after surviving the hardship of the war came to Montreal where she met and married Andrzej in 1952. They started their lives and their family together in Montreal and while they were poor at the time their lives were rich with family and friends, discussion and debates about politics and culture and much community involvement. Job opportunities brought them to Winnipeg in the early 1960s where many friendships were developed within the Polish community. They then moved to Brandon and Elkhorn where Andrzej taught high school and after his death, Lucy and the children moved back to Winnipeg permanently. While they only had a short time together, Andrzej always remained forever the love of her life. Babcia had a great love for the Guide Movement. She was very involved as a Girl Guide as a child and continued on as a Guide leader, in Poland before the war, during the war in the refugee camps and later in Canada. She also talked often about how she had always known she wanted to be a teacher. She taught home economics at Morse Place and then special education at St. Amant before she retired. Lucy was very active in her Polish Combatants Association, created beautiful pottery in traditional Polish designs, painted, learned to play bridge, was an avid reader and went for walks daily as well as pool exercises. Babcia welcomed her six grandchildren with open arms and always enjoyed seeing them and feeding them. She would often take them out for special occasions to have some one-on-one time with them. She instilled in them their love of art. She had a wonderful sense of humour which she never lost right to the end. For the past two and one half years Lucy lived at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre and her family would like to thank the incredible staff for their compassionate care. Mass of the resurrection will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Vital Parish, 1639 Pembina Hwy. with Fr. Barry Schoonbaert officiating. Private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your children's charity of choice.
