GRACE EVELYN NELSON June 4, 1918 - March 11, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Grace Evelyn Nelson on March 11, 2013 at River East Personal Care Home, at the age of 94. Mom was born June 4, 1918 in Otto, Manitoba, the daughter of Walter and Haldora Hirst. She was one of a family of eight brothers and sisters and was the last surviving sibling. Mom was predeceased by her husbands Bjorn (Barney) Nelson and Melville (Mel) Garrioch, and her son Lynn Nelson. Left to cherish her memory are sons Don, Ken, Barry, Dennis (Karen), Dan (Mavis) and daughters Lillian, Darlene (Bill), and Kim (Chris). She will also be dearly missed by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mom spent her early years in Clarkleigh, Manitoba where she learned the value of hard work through her family's farming and fishing activities. Later, the family moved to Oak Point during which time Mom married Barney and had seven children. After a fire destroyed their home, the family moved to Winnipeg where she spent the rest of her life. In Winnipeg, Mom joined her life with Mel and this was followed by the birth of the last two of her nine children. Mom embraced life to the fullest. She was very active in the community participating extensively in bowling, Youth Bowling Council, cribbage tournaments and dancing at Senior Centres. She was a champion bowler and represented Manitoba on several occasions. Mom was also an avid fan of professional wrestling and spent many fun-filled evenings with her grandsons at the Winnipeg Arena. Family was very important to Mom. She had a great sense of humour and loved to laugh. Mom would lend a hand to anyone, and always wanted to make sure "you had enough to go on". She was kind, compassionate, and thoughtful and it was a blessing to have her in our lives. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff of River East Personal Care Home for their kind and thoughtful care of Mom during her stay. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium, 1800 Day Street, Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place. A private interment will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of one's choice. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Grandma (Gabby) meant the world to me. Of all the people in this world I have met, none other has given me a stronger reason to walk in the path and footsteps of. She was an amazing lady who was always caring for everyone else. Nothing beat our Sunday night dinners over at her house either on Osborne, Pembina and Portgage. Growing up begging to go to Grandma's house for her cooking, like her roast beef, banana bread, veena-tarta and well, anything else you could ask for. We never left hungry. I spent many visits cuddling with her on her lap, playing with her hands and still remember her bouncing me on her foot. Then the greatest gift was to watch her do the same for both Kayla and Rylan and that still brings a tear to my eye. I couldn't tell you how many phone calls to Grandma and times that she came to see her boys. "Grandma, what do you want for your birthday? Three good boys. Grandma, what do you want for Christmas? Three good boys". You will be missed dearly and I want to say thank you for showing me how to behave in life, act to others and enjoy life no matter what it holds. I love you Grandma, Watch over me. - Posted by: Nick Landry (Grandson) on: Mar 25, 2013

  • I'll never forget Grandma taking me bowling, WWF wrestling, making the best oatmeal ever, taking me to numerous Hulk Hogan movies and always making time for me. She was never judge-mental and always accepted people no matter what. I always looked up and admired Grandma for speaking her mind and always having a strong backbone. She never put herself first and made sure you never went without. I;m thankful to have said good-bye and the fact Grandma lived long enough to see myself get married and break out on my own in Winkler. She has and will always have a special place in my heart. Grandma, Janelle, Hope, baby and myself will always love and remember you!! Love always Wes, Janelle, Hope and baby Landry (due beginning of April). - Posted by: Wes Landry (Grandson) on: Mar 23, 2013
