GERARD (GERRY) JOSEPH DOUTHART November 18, 1941 - April 1, 2013 Peacefully after a brief illness, Gerry passed away early Monday morning with his children by his side. Born in a small picturesque town on the north coast of Ireland, his heart remained, but his adventurous spirit lead him to England and then to Canada with his wife and baby girl in 1967. He came to Canada on his own first to find work and a home for his young family. He left his first career as a butcher to try his hand at cabinet making. Starting in his own garage, he eventually established Douthart Cabinets which became a landmark on Dugald Road and a drop in center for a coffee and a good "yarn". Many homes in Winnipeg still display his handiwork to this day. After trying his hand at many other ventures, he retired in 2001 following the death of his wife Rosaleen. He spent several years travelling to Ireland and Vancouver to find comfort with family. In 2005, he met Louise and they soon married and spent the next six years travelling, golfing and enjoying winters in Arizona and Texas with good friends. He is predeceased by his mother Mary and father William and brother Stephen (2012) and first wife Rosaleen (2001). He is survived by his wife Louise, sister Mary (Dan) and their four sons, daughter Bernice (Jean) and son Eamon (Caroline) and grandchildren Emily, Aidan, Colin, Declan and Lauren. Also Louise's children Rob (Sandi), Lynne (Brian), Michelle (Cary), Alain (Jodie) and grandchildren Devon, Cameron, Jaron, Madeleine, Adam, Ella and Marlo. Special thanks to Dr. Chowdry, Dr. Maksymiuk and nurse Meagan and the caring staff at CancerCare Manitoba. Also special thanks for the care of Dr. S. Sinha. The family appreciates the above and beyond care shown by the ER staff at the Health Sciences Centre. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernadette's Parish 820 Cottonwood Road on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba in his memory, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. Condolences & Memories (21 entries)

  • Deepest sympathy to Bernice and Eamon and their families at this time and to Louise. I have many happy memories of Gerry (Joe!) from my summer in Winnipeg as a teenager. The generosity and hospitality of both Joe and Rosaleen is something I have never forgotten. The laughs we had sitting late at night at the kitchen table talking about our native Ballycastle made home seem never far away. Bernice I hope you are getting through this, talk soon. Your friend Julie - Posted by: Julie Campbell (Family friend) on: May 13, 2013

  • So sorry to hear about Gerry's passing; it was a pleasure to meet him a couple of years ago here in B.C., where we met him with Louise & Paulette. Then another great visit in Sadona, AZ. What great memories and we are privileged to have had this opportunity. May you be at peace Gerry. - Posted by: Wayne & Susie Nicoll (cousins of Louise...and then to Gerry) on: Apr 16, 2013

  • Thanks to everyone who have expressed their condolences in the past couple of weeks. Dad was one of the last few people left who would go to the end of the earth for someone he cared about and generous to a fault. I hope you all remember him fondly and when you do, do a good turn for someone. I hope the golfing is grand in heaven Dad, and all those you lost were waiting with open arms. Much love. - Posted by: Bernice (daughter) on: Apr 15, 2013

  • Papa always loved being with family, just like my granny, and his first wife Rosaleen. We would always know when he was with us because he had a signature whistle to let us know he was there. I loved golfing with him. RIP Papa. AMDG - Posted by: Aidan Prenovault (Grandson) on: Apr 06, 2013

  • My memories are of the warm hospitality @ the Douthart home during our training. It was always a place of laughter & fun. Gerry was often heard telling a joke or humourous anecdote that kept us all in stitches. He & Rosaleen were a wonderful pair. I'll always remember them with love.
