STEVE KRALKA Peacefully on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at Riverview Health Centre, Steve Kralka passed away with his son at his side after a two year battle with cancer. Steve will be greatly missed by his sister Lucy (Gerry), and his children: Peter (June), Jim, Joan (George), and Mick (Bobbi). He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Lorrie, Michael, Tracey, David, Lindsay, Nikki, and Jasmine. He was predeceased by his wife, Rita, and brothers, Bill (Doreen) and Peter (Suzanne). Steve was born in 1925 at his family home in Transcona, and lived and worked most of his life within the community. Towards the end of the Second World War, he joined the R.C.A.F. and worked as a radio technician in Atlantic Canada. On returning home, he met and married Rita Suffron and joined the C.N.R. as a carman apprentice. In 1948, he was transferred to Saskatoon for six months. In 1954, he built the family cottage at Ottermere, Ontario where they enjoyed every summer from then on. Steve loved fishing and fixing anything and everything. He freely gave advice on a variety of projects when asked. He was extremely active in the community. He coached baseball and hockey, umpired little league baseball, and helped with construction of the East End Community Club. When he retired from the railway in 1982, he took up golf and was soon a regular sight at the Transcona Golf Course. He spent endless hours in his workshop creating wooden items for friends and family alike. In his golden years, Steve continued to embrace new pastimes such as darts in winter and road trips in the summer. The family wishes to extend a thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff of CancerCare Canada and Riverview Health Centre. As per Steve's wishes, cremation has already taken place, and a celebration of life gathering over refreshments will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17 at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium, 1800 Day St., Transcona. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Funeral Arrangements in Care of Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium 1800 Day Street 224-1525

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • My sympathies to the family. I hold few but good memories of Steve. From what I could see he was a cheerful, ambitious neighbor and friend in Ottermere. I will miss Our little conversations we had outdoors. He had interesting advice and stories. I am glad I had the chance to spend some moments with him which are good memories that I can share. It was a pleasure knowing Steve. - Posted by: Gisele gosselin (Ottermere friend) on: Apr 17, 2013

  • When my young daughters heard of Steve's passing they were saddened and added "but he was such a cute old man who could fix anything" As was written earlier, Steve was a true gentleman, who cared for others. Will miss his wisdom and old handyman tricks, but will keep his pickerel recipe. - Posted by: Ray Gosselin (Cottage Neighbour) on: Apr 16, 2013

  • While I have never met Steve, my observations of his son, Mick, indicates Steve took his responsibilities as a father seriously. He passed on his love of summer vacations as well as values such as volunteerism, thoughtfulness, a strong work ethic and an understated sense of humour to his children and grandchildren. Which leads me to conclude that while Steve's presence will be missed, his spirit and character live on. Our sympathies and best wishes to all of Steve's family. - Posted by: Randy and Marjie Ottenbreit (Uncle of Steve Kralka's daughter-in-law, Bobbi) on: Apr 14, 2013

  • Kralka Family Uncle Steve for me was a strong, almost stern looking man---until he smiled. Then what I saw was a caring, humourous man who enjoyed having people around him. Since I moved away a long time ago, I didn't get to know him as well as I would have liked. I know you will all miss him. Our condolences from British Columbia. Regards. • Though our paths crossed many years ago, Steve was a sincere dedicated gentleman, well respected by all who shared moments of life with him. - Posted by: Bill Burdeyny (Served CNR Apprenticeships together in Transconai) on: Apr 13, 2013

  • First met Steve at the Transcona Golf Club, probably back around 1998 or so. Had the privilege of getting to know him and did a little work on the Course with him. Steve was one of the finest gentleman that I have ever met. For all he did for others, I don't think he ever asked for anything for himself. - Posted by: Robert Olien ("friend") on: Apr 13, 2013
