Date of Passing: Apr 15, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEILEEN (JOYCE) JOHNSON (SIGURDSON) January 2, 1962 - April 15, 2013 It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of our beautiful wife and mother. Joyce passed away on April 15, 2013 after a very courageous battle with cancer. Leaving to mourn and cherish her memory: her loving husband Rob and their beloved daughters Janessa (Keenan) and Carrigan; mother Emily Sigurdson and "papa" Thor Olson; siblings, Gerri (Ueli), Pat (Daryl), Jo-Ann (Ed), Dan (Laurence), Pam, Lloyd (Maureen), and Carol (Ronald); her mother-in-law Hulda Johnson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lori Anne (Garnett), Margaret (Rick), Hilmar (Lisa), Florence (Jim), Mark, and David (Teresa) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Auntie Joyce treated her nieces and nephews like her own children. She will be missed by them immensely. She was predeceased by her father Sveinn Sigurdson and father-in-law Sigmar Johnson. Joyce was born in Arborg on January 2, 1962. She grew up in Geysir, moving to Riverton in 1976. She attended school in Riverton and graduated in 1980. She married the love of her life, Robert Johnson on August 10, 1991. Together they worked on the farm at "Osi", raising their two beautiful daughters. Joyce was a very passionate community minded person, serving on the skating rink and hall boards. She was also the unofficial Centennial Park gardener and the best grass cutter. She involved herself in many of her children's activities including New Iceland Youth Choir, coaching soccer and volleyball. Joyce was the school hot dog lady and unofficial school crosswalk police. Joyce was a member of the Icelandic River Heritage Sites Inc. committee, and host family for the Snorri West program. She was very proud of her Icelandic heritage. Over the years the Johnson Family was home to many agricultural exchange trainees. Her home was a beehive of activity, coffee was always on and her homemade pizza was the best. Travelling was one of Joyce's interests, starting with riding around with Rob on his motorcycle. Their first big trip was to San Diego along with numerous other rides to British Columbia. They also went abroad and travelled to Europe. As a family they travelled to the U.S., Australia, and most recently Iceland. Joyce was an amazing woman with a heart of gold. Her devotion to her family and friends was immeasurable. Her vibrant personality drew all to her. A celebration of Joyce's life will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Riverton Recreational Complex. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Gimli Community Health Centre, CancerCare Manitoba, and the homecare workers. Special thanks to Dr. S. V. Patel, Julie and Donna. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Joyce to the Icelandic River Heritage Sites Inc., Box 555, Riverton, Manitoba R0C 2R0. I Carry Your Heart Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements. www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

My deepest condolences to Robert, Janessa and Carrigan. Joyce was such a great lady, the last time I saw her was last spring, at a social in Riverton. We had such a wonderful talk and she talked openly about her illness. Her attitude, strength and courage were very inspiring. Robert, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers, may you find some comfort in your memories. Love Tracey - Posted by: Tracey Jonasson (Friend) on: Apr 24, 2013

I met Joyce and her wonderful family when I was on the Snorri program in 2007 and we all became instant friends. Over the years I have visited Riverton annually and Rob and Joyce's house became one of my homes away from home in Canada. Our friendship only grew stronger over the years and I was richer in spirit because of it. I have had the pleasure of having both Janessa and Carrigan over at my house in Iceland and only two years ago Joyce and her sister Pat were sitting in my parents kitchen in Iceland laughing and enjoying life. After meeting Joyce my mom said that it was like she had always known her. She had this calming serene affect on people, a beautiful quality portrayed best in the kindest of souls, like our Joyce. We were not blood related but we called each other family still the same and always will. Her smile was one of those smiles that instantly touched your heart and made you feel better. I will always remember your smile dear friend. Our prayers and thoughts are with you dear Rob, Janessa and Carrigan love from your family across the ocean - Posted by: Hrafnhildur (Hrabba) and Heida.
