FRANCISCUS HENDRICUS BORSBOOM
Born: Jun 30, 1940
Date of Passing: Apr 20, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFRANCISCUS HENDRICUS BORSBOOM June 30, 1940 - April 20, 2013 With great sadness the family regrets to announce the tragic passing of our husband, father and grandfather, at St. Boniface Hospital, on April 20, 2013. A man who loved life; who cherished his home, family and dogs; who loved to cook and travel to different parts of the world and meet new people - that was Frans. Born in S-Gravenhage, Holland, Frans originally trained to be a Chef, and then ran a successful poultry business before immigrating with his family to Canada in the early 1980s. He triumphed over adversity in a new land, working as an Executive Chef in Hecla Island, before working for many years in the far north as a chef. Prior to his retirement in 2009, he cooked for the Good Neighbours Senior Centre where his overly-generous portions were gratefully received. He also volunteered at the Mount Carmel Clinic and was always willing to help anyone in need. Frans loved his wife, sons and stepsons and found great joy in his grandchildren. He never said no to anyone and was a kind, generous and affectionate person. He enjoyed socializing; travelling overseas and in his RV; soccer games; riding his scooter; participating in activities with the club, Men Sheds and taking daily walks in the park with his faithful companions, Nikki and Mars. Last, but not least, Frans will be remembered for his prowess in the kitchen and the joy he took in creating meals for family and friends. We love you, Frans (Pop, Opa). You may no longer be "in the picture" as you always used to say but you will always be in our hearts. - Andrew, Michael-john, Maude, Kristin, Eric, Jennifer, Nathan, Naomi, Faye, Maddie, Fransz and Danika, John and Wendy. Rest in peace "dahling" - Diane Thank you to our supportive friends. Many thanks to the wonderful people at the Flagstaff Medical Centre, especially to Karen who looked after our dogs, and thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital. At Frans' request, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Diabetes Association of Manitoba. Wojcik's Funeral Home & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, 204-897-4665, wojciksfuneralchapel.com

Frans was much more than a great Chef to all those that knew Him on the Radar Sites, He was caring, Soft Spoken and a Guy that would make time to talk to You. I Remember Him as someone I enjoyed talking to and He always made Me smile. Rest in Peace Frans. - Posted by: Keith Pardy (Co Worker North Warning System ( Dewline )) on: Sep 01, 2013

Have just received the sad news of Frans' passing. Richard and I shared many happy meals with Frans and Diane in restaurants and our homes. He was a sweet, lovely gentleman. A meal at his home was a very special occasion and we were always made to feel very special. We are so glad that Frans and Diane were able to truly live life to the fullest with family, friends and all their traveling. Diane, our sympathies are with you at this very sad time. Our hearts go out to Diane and family with the passing of their dear Frans. Luc and I are so grateful we had the time to get to know Frans. Diane and I were co-workers and we started including our husbands in our visits and found out very soon how much we all had in common. It was either dinner at our house or their's and we always waited in anticipation to find out what gourmet meal Frans had prepared for us along with his pastry chef, Diane. Frans was a very kind, generous and fun loving friend who Luc and I will miss very much. I will always remember his beautiful smile. Rest in peace dear friend. - Posted by: Donna and Luc (Friends) on: Apr 30, 2013

Frans was a sweet gentle giant who stood head and shoulders above many. Perhaps not so much in stature as in kindness, wisdom and humanity. A blessing not only to his family but also his friends. Sincerest condolence to Diane and the family. May warm memories of Frans keep in close in heart. He enjoyed life. - Posted by: Mary-Louise Doherty (Friend) on: Apr 30, 2013

We had only known Frans for the past 3 years, and because of not living near one another we didn't really see each other much. But, when we did we always enjoyed he and Diane. I remember when they came to visit Eric and Jennifer a couple of summers ago, I went into the local grocery store to pick up some food for supper. As I turned into the parking lot, I saw this man sitting in a lawn chair outside his R.V in the parking lot with his dogs. I thought to myself, "who is that guy?" It was a small town and every one knew every one... Then I realized it was Frans sitting waiting for Diane to purchase some groceries. I drove over and parked beside his R.V and had a chat while waiting for Diane to come out of the store. Also, last Fall while Charlie and I travelled Western Canadian, we stopped in Winnipeg to visit family. We also met Frans and Diane, enjoyed a lovely lunch together and then they toured us around the city. Always enjoyed being together, even if those visits were few. Wish we had more of them!! Frans, you will be missed! - Posted by: Jane ans Charlie Szturm (Eric, our son-in-law's Dad) on: Apr 29, 2013

Pop, I will miss you, You were a great role model to look up to. You taught me how to be strong, and respect others, you showed me how to live life to the fullest and always look at the positives. You were there for me every time I needed you. We did not say it often, but you showed me true Love for a son. Me Jen Fransz and Danika and the entire Szturm family will miss your upbeat, fun visits, and seeing you and Diane drive of on that tiny scooter with your Harley Jacket on. Thank you and Diane for all that you did for our family and how you would always sighn of to me, you would say " Sterkte ". = strength, something you were and always will be to me. Love you Pop Eric - Posted by: Eric Borsboom (Son) on: Apr 29, 2013

I had the privilege of working with Frans at Gull Harbour Resort in Hecla. He was my chef and he was famous for and the first to bring made-to-order omlets for Sunday Brunch in the Dining Room and also freshly squeezed orange juice and his pastry and fruit trays were unbelievable. Frans always talked about getting up North to work and make the big bucks and he did just that. He was a real professional in the kitchen and took all his cooks under his wing and taught them so much. I learned a lot from Frans and enjoyed working with him. Opa will be dearly missed on his bi-annual treks out to see his family in BC. We greatly enjoyed the time he spent with us; making us laugh, living life to the fullest, and making us sit through endless episodes of Coronation Street! Rest in peace. - Posted by: Michael-john, Maude, Naomi & Faye (Family) on: Apr 27, 2013

Dear Frans, you will be missed terribly. You were at my wedding 25 years ago as a surprise from Canada. We were several times in Canada and stayed at your place or with Mark Myrowich. Rest in peace and our thoughts will be with Frans jr and Eric and the rest of the family. I was a young man at my first job in Hecla and Frans was my boss 28 years ago. He treated me with kindness and when I told him that after high school I was back packing through Europe he hooked me up with a Lenny and Anita in Holland Who became like a mother and sister to me, we are still close today. Frans had a big heart and was a big influence in the early part of my life. I am very fortunate that our paths crossed as he influenced me greatly. Rest in Peace - Posted by: Mark Myrowich (Friend) on: Apr 27, 2013

Saying goodbye to a wonderful man is never easy but Frans is someone I will carry in my heart forever! We worked together at Hecla from 1984-1991 and shared many amazing memories, but his dream was to work up NORTH and make big bucks as he would say, and his other dream was to meet Diane, and that he did, but even with his busy full life he always made time for old friends, so we seldom lost touch. He had a heart of GOLD and our good memories will live on forever. We will miss you Frans. Love to Diane, the boys and their gorgeous families xxxx Sincere sympathy Susie, Joel, Sean and Nicole - Posted by: Susie Bjarnason (Good Friend and previous coworker at Hecla Island) on: Apr 27, 2013
