ROMAN GIEREK It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dear father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend on April 28, 2013 at the age of 79 years. Roman was born in Winnipeg on April 13, 1934 and grew up in the North End of the city before moving to Brandon Avenue in Fort Rouge. After getting married and moving to Pembina Highway he worked at many jobs including a caisson worker, construction worker and a blacksmith for the C.N.R. before joining the Winnipeg Police in February of 1960. Roman "walked the beat" as a police constable and worked his way up the ranks, educating himself along the way to become a detective and eventually staff sergeant in the youth division before retiring in March of 1993 after 33 years of service. Shortly before retiring Roman moved to a large property on the Red River just south of Ste. Agathe, where he enjoyed his retirement until moving back to Winnipeg in 2011. He was an avid fisherman, played golf and had an incredible artistic talent ranging from wood carving and taxidermy to drawing and painting. His true love was oil painting and he gained inspiration for his many masterpieces from his numerous fishing trips to the Whiteshell. He was also a member of the Assiniboia artists group and exhibited his paintings for many years at the Art Expo. Roman was predeceased by his mother and father, brother Stan, sister Veronica, and mother of his seven children Daphne. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife and soul mate Myrna, his children, Lynn Angus (Ken), Stephen of Oshawa, ON, David (Gail), Juliana Chadwick (Wayne) of Squamish, BC, Maureen Urbanovich (Ken), Michael (Nicole), Erin, ten grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. He will also be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3 at Grant Memorial Baptist Church, 877 Wilkes Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Cremation has taken place and Roman will be taken to his final resting place in a private family ceremony this summer. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Blouw and all of the wonderful and caring staff at the Victoria General Hospital for their care and support. Rest in peace father, we love you. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • Roman, you were my Soul Mate, and miss you terribly. We had a fantastic 7 years together, and you couldn't have been a better partner. I feel so blessed to have known you for that short while. I had always kidded you about meeting you sooner, if I had stayed with the Fort Garry Police Dept. and made the transfer to the Juvenile Division in 1974, but God knew the right time for us to meet. Love you always, til we meet again. - Posted by: Myrna Gierek (Wife) on: May 11, 2013

  • My father, Arthur H. Hickling, was for several years the Court Constable in Winnipeg Family and Juvenile Court. He subsequently was appointed Magistrate in Juvenile Court. Dad would speak of a fine Winnipeg Police Juvenile Div. Detective, namely Roman Gierek. He lauded Detective Gierek for the way he presented evidence and his professional presence in Court. Apparently Detective Gierek was respected by all the Judges and persons involved in dealing with juvenile offenders. I hadn't met Roman Gierek until the amalgamation of the municipal police forces into the one Winnipeg Police Force. I had been a Fort Garry Police Detective. A few years after amalgamation, Roman and I were enrolled in Police Artist Courses. Roman was every bit the gentleman my dad spoke of. Roman was an outstanding artist. I enjoyed our conversations over lunch and on a special occasion when our group of police artists hosted a gathering of International Police Artists in Winnipeg. Roman Gierek was a congenial, professional and talented man. I'm sure his family will always cherish his memory. - Posted by: Dick Hickling (Colleague - Winnipeg Police ( 1960 to 1987 )) on: May 02, 2013

  • Dear Stephen and family, So sorry to hear of the passing of your father/husband/grandfather. I think back to when Michael was here visiting you, and we had our picnic breakfast. The many stories you shared about your Dad made me feel as if I knew him also. Even though his loss has left an empty place in your hearts, think of the memories you have of him, and be glad that he is no longer in pain. I'm sure he is looking down on all of you and sending his love to help you in the coming days. Know that we are thinking of the whole family at this time.
