Date of Passing: May 04, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGORDON ASHCROFT March 4, 1938 - May 4, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gordon (wee Gordie) on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Concordia Hospital, at the age of 75 years. Predeceased by his infant daughter Linda, son Stephen, and daughter Ann, Gordie is survived by his loving wife Margaret; son Gordon; daughter Kimberly (Wally) and grandchildren Donnie, IIan, Chanelle, Chantilly, Carson and Jesse; brother Tommy; sister-in-law Mary, many nieces and nephews of Scotland, England and Canada, also by his wee pal Boots. Gordie was born in Glasgow, Scotland March 4, 1938 where he took his apprenticeship as a carpenter (joiner), then moved to Winnipeg with his family in 1967. He worked at several interesting jobs including the Museum of Man and Nature. He retired from the City of Winnipeg (Transit Division) in 2003. He was a natural carpenter and always said his hobby was his job. Over the years he offered help to many friends and relatives, building garages, bars, rec rooms, anything required, and loved every minute. He and Marg were married in 1978 and enjoyed 35 great travel bug years together, visiting the U.K., Rome, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Spain, cruises, as well as spending eight winters in Texas. Gordie became a Freemason in 1979, serving as master of his lodge in 1985, and was very proud of the charities they supported and friendship they offered. He was also a 20 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Transcona Branch #7, joining many activities over the years, and as always with Gordie, meeting new people and making new friends. He was a friendly, humorous man, generous to a fault, loved people and living, telling jokes and having a good laugh. We will miss him dearly. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium, 1800 Day street. Interment at Transcona Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation Funeral Arrangements in Care of Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematorium 1800 Day Street 224-1525

Kind..yes, humurous...yes, sincere...yes, welcoming...yes, a joy to be around...definitely yes, likes lamb...no questions asked!! This is what describes this man who I have had the pleasure of knowing. It was always such a delight to see his smiling face in Kenora at the cottage and to listen to his jokes. You would never be left without something to talk about when you were around him. You will be missed Gordy and please know in the short visits we have had you will always have a spot on my heart! My thoughts and love are you with you Marg and your family during this time! My arms are wrapped around you and giving you a big hug!! As for you Gordy, rest in peace! Memories from his sister-in-law Ev: I first met Gordie when Marg introduced us at a party in Transcona. He sat beside me and we chatted a bit. I’m not sure if it was the loud music, the drinks, the atmosphere or the Scottish accent but I never understood a word he said, just sat nodding my head and probably asking inane questions. However, he made a good impression and I was happy a year or two later when Marg told me he would become our brother-in-law. I stood happily beside them when Marg and Gordie married 35 years ago. Since then Gordie was an important part of our family -- brother, helper, cheerleader for the Tyson clan and great supporter to Marg, Kim and their family group. No one could have asked for a more generous person as he shared his heart and love for all of us. We never visited Winnipeg and stopped by their place that there was not a bottle of Scotch waiting for Stan to enjoy a drink (even though it was not Gordie’s drink of choice at the time). He was a cheerful host, sharing stories and jokes and family chat. He especially enjoyed telling stories about the antics of his friends, the skits, the camaraderie and good times he enjoyed with people and co-workers when he and Marg got together with them. And thoughts from Stan, brother-in-law: One had to be careful when mentioning jobs to be done around Gordie because he immediately came to the rescue and offered to help out. He gave generously of his carpentry skills, offering advice, tools, and help whenever needed. One weekend he trimmed all of the doors and windows in our unfinished cottage, a job that would have taken us weeks to complete without him. We will always be grateful for the way he helped us during those years. His generosity showed in all areas of his life, in the warmth and hospitality he showed to visitors and the welcome he provided to guests in their home. He enjoyed a good joke and laugh. A few years ago he showed us a video of himself surfing and his description was so convincing that we were very tempted to believe him! Gordie introduced me to the finer points of soccer, explaining the different strategies and what to watch. Ever since, I’ve enjoyed soccer games on the TV and have watched the World Cups with enthusiasm – all because Gordie spent the time with me. We chuckled many times and had good laughs together sharing stories about our being married to the Tyson-girls and what that meant in terms of sharing our good fortunes together. Every time I look at the wooden loonie holder beside my desk, I am reminded of all the great times we have had with Gordie and the friendly and helpful advice he gave me on many occasions. Although seen only a few times a year, he always had a strong and heartful hand shake, big smile and sometimes even a bear hug. We will all miss you "Wee Gordie.” - Posted by: Evelyn Schriber (sister-in-law) on: May 12, 2013
