ELMER INGVAR SIGFUSSON
Date of Passing: May 07, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELMER INGVAR SIGFUSSON March 10, 1930 - May 7, 2013 With family by his side Elmer passed away peacefully on May 7, 2013 at Lakeshore General Hospital, at the age of 83 years. Elmer leaves behind his sister Oleen (Ray) Richter, sisters-in-law Joan Sigfusson, Joyce Sigfusson, and Rita Sigfusson, eight nieces and nephews, as well as many great-nieces and nephews. Elmer was predeceased by his parents Anna and Gisli, brothers Sigmar, Skapti, Gisli, and Flovent, sister-in-law Margaret, nephew Sheldon Sigfusson, and niece Candace Craig. Elmer was born on March 10, 1930. He lived most all his life on the family farm in Oakview, MB. As a child Elmer attended Darwin and Narrows schools. Elmer helped his mother in the house and learned to be an excellent cook and a great help to her. After Anna's death in 1961, Elmer took over the household responsibilities including grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning while still helping with outside farm work. Elmer loved country music, and the Saturday Night Polka Party on the radio. Elmer got much enjoyment in singing and yodelling, for the kids or anyone in listening distance. He loved to see them laugh. Elmer was a true Icelander. He spoke and read Icelandic fluently and didn't like to miss a single issue of the Logberg Heimskringla. Elmer was always small in stature but had a big heart and a tremendous memory. He was very observant and particular in many ways. Elmer lived a simple life and took pleasure in things others might have found trivial. He never expected or wanted a lot, but appreciated and took good care of what he had. Elmer loved to talk to people, whether he knew them or not. If you took the time to listen; Elmer would talk. Elmer could often be seen with his walking stick along the highway. He always had a wave for everybody driving by. He was "the little man who lived in the old house on the hill". Elmer loved all children but especially his nieces and nephews and their children. He could always find a treat of some sort when they visited. He was so proud of all his family's accomplishments. Seven years ago Elmer reluctantly moved from the farm to town due to his health. His life was enriched with new friendships made at the Pioneer Manor and Care Home. Elmer passed away peacefully. He talked to us just like any other day right to the end. Very quietly, very quickly Elmer was gone. Elmer's family would like to extend special thanks to all the home care workers at the Pioneer Manor, as well as all the Doctors, nurses and staff at the Care Home and Hospital. A heartfelt thank you to all of those people who showed kindness to Elmer over the years. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Ashern Personal Care Home - c/o Margaret Gutknecht, PO Box 110, Ashern, Manitoba R0C 0E0. My sincere condolences to all the family. Yes, Elmer certainly was so very proud of his Family & his Icelandic heritage. I, too, received my "Icelandic" education from him when I lived with the Petersons in '62-63! We always had great conversations in later years whenever we met! Like you, Lindy, I missed his friendly wave whenever I passed Sigfusson Hill! I'll bet he's having a GREAT REUNION with his brothers & family now!! - Posted by: Marliene Lutz (Acquaintance) on: May 11, 2013

Elmer was a true historian in our community. He could remember dates of events, births and so much more that was unbelievable. I enjoyed our many conversations at the Pioneer Manor where he lived with his new manor family. You are missed by many Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Sandra McDougall (Friend (senior support services Coordinator)) on: May 10, 2013

Little Elmer. I will always remember you bud. When you would come w/your Dad to the Vogar store for groceries. Your constant smile and gentle inquisitive nature touched the hearts of all that knew u. Back then and later as I trucked through our home area. I'm sure that no-one could count all the friendly waves that you gave to me and all the other truckers that took the Narrows route. I and countless others will still think of you every time we approach the Sigfusson hill. Rest Peacefully Elmer.....and keep waving my friend. - Posted by: Lindy Johnson (friend) on: May 09, 2013
