CHRISTEL BORON Suddenly, on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at her home, Christel passed away at the age of 91. Left to cherish her memory are sons, Tony and Victor (Wendy), and grandson Tim (Danielle). She was predeceased by her daughter Waltraud and husband Victor. Christel was born in Germany in 1921 and survived the bombings during the Second World War. Displaced and looking for a better life, she and her two young children immigrated to Canada and arrived in West St. Paul in 1951 following her husband Victor who arrived a year earlier. In 1967, she assumed proprietorship of the corner store, Boron's Groceteria, which will be fondly remembered by at least a couple of generations of teenagers as the place to meet prior to further adventures. She also met and got to know most of the people in the community. After retiring in 1980, Christel took on another challenge and obtained her driver's license at the age of 60. She continued to drive and maintain a large garden into her mid-eighties until arthritis limited her mobility. She loved to crochet and her slippers and afghan blankets were enjoyed by many. Her can-do attitude was an inspiration. Christel's mind was still sharp, honed by a regimen of word puzzles, books, and a continuing interest in current affairs. If you needed a weather forecast, Christel was your first stop, then the Internet. She also had an amusing repertoire of phrases to convey her emotion at the moment; "You're kidding!" and "You won't believe it!" amongst the many. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the West St. Paul Fire Department, EMS services of Winnipeg, and Cst. Savard of the RCMP for their care and compassion. Special thanks to long-time neighbour, Ed Chapiel for his help throughout the years, and her home care workers. Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Christel's memory to the Children's Hospital or a charity of choice.
