CHARLES S. TULLY It is with profound sadness that the family reports the passing of Charlie Tully, on May 12, 2013 at the Deer Lodge Centre. Born in 1921, in Vermilion, Alberta, dad attended school, worked, and grew up in a poor ranching and farming environment during the Depression. In the autumn of 1940 he joined the R.C.A.F. and later, in June of 1941, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy Voluntary Reserve. He served on Corvettes and Destroyers, escorting convoys across the North Atlantic, primarily to Britain. He met the love of his life, and married mom, Eileen Hiebert, on May 30, 1942. Dad was discharged from the Navy in October 1945, and returned to Winnipeg. He joined the City of Winnipeg Police Department in November of 1946. Over the following years he worked his way through beat patrol, cruisers, detectives, morality, identification, and several years in traffic division and on motorcycles, where he was very involved with school patrols, producing a training manual and film. In 1956 he entered the police training department, and later attended many courses across Canada, and at the University of Manitoba, working his way up in rank as an instructor, training and personnel officer, and retiring in 1980 as a police superintendent. Dad's primary hobby was woodworking, designing and building various projects, including many items of furniture, a small boat, many carvings and the family cottage with its stone fireplace and chimney. He enjoyed many good years at the cottage, boating much of the south basin of Lake Winnipeg, relishing time with his daughter's four boys, always working on something, and late in the afternoon, relaxing with a rum and coke. He and mom enjoyed travel to Europe, the U.S.A., and especially the many winter trips to Hawaii, which was his perfect warm and sunny climate. Throughout his life dad was active in his chosen organizations, serving on the Boards of the United Church for 22 years and in 1977 served as President of the Winnipeg St. Andrew's Society. He will be deeply missed and remembered by his wife of over 70 years, Eileen, his son Steven, daughter Charlene (Dennis), grandsons Christian, Matthew, Reald and Brendan, and seven great-grandchildren. Our thanks to the caring staff at Deer Lodge Centre, who made dad's last two years safer, healthier and more pleasant. Cremation will be followed at a later date with a private interment at St. Vital Cemetery. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • Charlie Tully was my great uncle and one of the all time greats for Celtic. Been trying to find relatives for some time now. I am the son of Sean (John) McMillan who left Belfast after the war and settled in Whitehaven Cumbria. My respect to his family. - Posted by: Sean McMillan (Great uncle) on: Mar 28, 2016

  • In 1986, Charlie was one of the first people we met when we moved into our Hillside cottage, kids, dogs, all of us. We will never forget, and will be eternally grateful, for the wisdom, kindness, patience and generosity he showed our family. There wasn't anything Charley didn't know or couldn't do, and he shared this with us many times, as we adjusted to life at the cottage. Our children adored him and learned about the beach, plumbing, boats, Devil's Island, and loved to hear his stories on the deck, with his Happy Hour rum and coke. Charlie was a gentleman, a mentor, and a dear friend, and we will never forget this wonderful man. Our condolances to the family; he was loved by all who knew him. - Posted by: Len and Donna Tratch (Hillside Beach neighbours) on: Jun 27, 2013

  • I had the pleasure of working in the training division while Charles was the Inspector in charge. Many good memories of those days. Our prayers and condolences go out to Eileen and her family. - Posted by: Lud Domaratzki (Fellow police officer) on: May 19, 2013

  • Our deepest expression of sympathy is extended to the Tully family, especially Eileen. Charlie was a role model for many police officers during his years of dedicated service to the citizens of Winnipeg. He left a lasting mark that has been recorded in the history of the Winnipeg Police Department. He was a good public servant. Cheers! - Posted by: Lawrence & Trudy Klippenstein (Friend and former co-worker) on: May 18, 2013
