ANDREW EGBERT BERGSMA Andrew Egbert Bergsma passed away peacefully on May 17, 2013 at the age of 86. He was surrounded by his family and is survived by his five children; Stephen, Daniel, Priscilla, Rhoda and Mareshah, their spouses and 14 grandchildren. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on March 16, 1927, his family relocated to Vancouver, BC at the age of five months, where he grew up and graduated from high school. He graduated from Calvin College in Grande Rapids, Michigan in 1951 with a Bachelor of Arts and intended to pursue a career in criminology. That all changed on October 11, 1951, when Andrew became a born-again Christian, and dedicated his life to the Lord Jesus and spreading the Gospel. His calling took him all over the world, and while in Holland he met Akke Geertsma. Andrew and Akke were married on October 10, 1973 and started a family of five children. In 1979, the Bergsma family moved back to Canada. Moves to Dawson Creek, BC, Terrace, BC and back to Dawson Creek, BC would follow. In 1992, Andrew lost Akke to cancer, and became a single parent to his five children. They relocated to Manitoba in 1994 and he lived in Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg until his passing to be with His Lord and Saviour. Andrew is remembered as a man of integrity, whose love of the Lord Jesus and his passion for the Gospel never wavered. He was an amazing husband and father, and was an example to aspire to. While frugal with himself, he was incredibly generous to everyone else, and left an impression on everyone he met. His was a life of purpose-lived for the Lord. He will always be missed and never forgotten. Funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Meyers, Norris Penny Building with Mr. Jack Gould and Mr. Ross Vanstone giving the gospel message. Private family interment was in Hillside Cemetery. To honour the memory of Andrew Bergsma, memorial donations to Postal Bible Studies, P.O. Box 110, Portage la Prairie, MB. • I remember meeting Mr. Bergson many years ago while a new assembly was being formed in Grande Prairie, Alberta I had met both his sons during that time as well. I can remember how enthusiastic and joyful this brother was. I remember how heartily he sang and the tremendous joy on one Sunday morning he brought to all of us after the breaking of bread. there were mostly young people there and the way he spoke words of encouragement to us and how we just sang our hearts out.. i'll never forget it. that same night I listened to him preach the gospel and he had invited some non assembly Christians to hear. he spoke of doctrinal truths that they had never heard and they quickly acknowledged this and they sat with enthusiasm for the remainder of the meeting. to see how he touched people and could reach out to anyone was clear and emphatic. he was truly sent to preach and to teach. I will miss him very much. I was reading the tribute to him in the truth and tidings magazine for July.. it brought tears to my eyes to read words of esteemed brethren speak so highly of him. it flooded my mind back to those days of spiritual growth, as that is exactly how I remembered him. it makes me think of the spiritual formula the Lord gave us in revelation chapter two in the address to the ephesians. to remember the first things, to repent and turn and then to redo the first things.. may the Lord bless his family and all those who were touched by this lovely man of God. - Posted by: andrew senn (acquaintance ) on: Jul 07, 2013

  • Brother Andrew was an occasional vistor in our home. He frequently showed up just as we were sitting down to supper and he was a welcome guest. After a bite to eat, we would retire to the living room with a cup of tea, and out came that small, black, well-worn bible. In the last ten years or so, I cannot count the many times that brother shared a scripture for encouragement or admonishment, always well-placed. After maybe a -half hour in the word, he would commit us to the Lord, and off he went, to visit someone else. He will be missed dearly by our family.
