PEARL (PARASKEVIA) WENGER
Date of Passing: May 27, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPEARL (PARASKEVIA) WENGER It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dearest wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on May 27, 2013. Remaining to forever cherish Mom's memory is her husband of 60 years Andrij; daughter Helen; son Ihor (Laurie); daughter Mary; five dearly loved grandchildren, Chris, Bobby, Daniel (Vanessa), Alexandra, Daniela and two great-granddaughters Willow and Isabella. Pearl was predeceased by her parents, Anna and Vasilj, brothers, Stefan, Oleksa and Volodymyr and recently, her sister Kataryna in December, 2011. Mom was born December 28, 1922 in Stariy Dykiw, povit Lubachiw in Western Ukraine. In 1940 at the age of 19, Mom was taken from her home and was placed into forced labour in Germany. She worked on a farm until the liberation by the Americans in 1945. She was then placed in a DP camp where she stayed until 1949. From there she immigrated to Canada in hopes of a better future. A family in Quebec City sponsored her for two years where she worked as a domestic helper. Mom then moved to Portage La Prairie with a girlfriend, but was unable to find work. She then moved to Winnipeg where she found employment in a sewing factory. Shortly after, Mom met Andrij and they married on May 16, 1953. They then started their family. While watching her children grow up, Mom was involved in their activities. Most of her time was spent at the Ukrainian Institute Prosvita where she volunteered sewing traditional costumes and helping in the kitchen. Even after her children were grown, she continued helping. She also belonged to St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church where she was a member of the Women's League and was honoured for 40 years of service. There Mom spent many occasions in the kitchen preparing meals with her dear friends. The golden opportunity of living in Canada was never forgotten. In 1963, Mom shared this experience by sponsoring her sister Kataryna and husband Stefan, along with their children Irene and Bohdan. Later, Mom and Dad sponsored many family members from Ukraine to stay for a few months, returning home with gifts. Mom and Dad enjoyed celebrating the religious holidays with large dinners for family and with their many friends. While they didn't have much early on, the dinners were soon a great source of wealth that they could share. Besides looking after her children, Mom also worked part time in the evenings, cleaning offices in Polo Park. For the last eight years of her employment, Mom worked full time at the University of Manitoba as a supervisor of housekeeping at the students' residence. With her free time, she enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens at home and at the cottage. She was an artisan in her sewing, embroidery, crocheting and knitting. These, we will forever cherish. Mom was blessed with many friends for whom we thank you all for being in her life. We thank the neighbours for watching out for Mom and Dad, in particular, Steve and Morris. A special thank you to Stephie Gojan for being Mom's dear friend. Mom moved into the St. Francis unit at Holy Family Home in 2009. She was cared for with dignity and compassion. Dementia stole so much of whom she was, but it never took away her caring spirit and her gentle touch. We would like to thank the late Drs. Gorski and Matwichuk, and Dr. Connelly and the entire staff on St. Francis. We felt comfort when leaving Mom behind and for this we thank you all. Panachyda (prayers) will be sung 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Friday May 31 at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 160 Euclid Ave. with a Fr. L. Ratushniak, C.Ss.R. officiating. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Andrew's Church, the Lubov SSMI Foundation designated to Holy Family Home or a charity of one's choice. "Rest in peace gentle Mother and Babchia.
