MARIA HORBAN On Sunday morning, May 26, 2013, Maria Horban passed away peacefully at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 88. Maria was predeceased by her beloved husband Fedir in 2002 and leaves to mourn Fedir's extended family in Ukraine. Maria Pustowit was born on September 7, 1924, in the Poltava region of Eastern Ukraine. At a young age she and her brother Vasyl were left orphans when their father Vlas and mother Yefemia both died during the Holodomor (Great Famine) in Ukraine. Maria lived with her godfather until the Second World War when she was taken to a forced labour camp in Germany. It was here that she met her future husband. After the war Maria settled in Derby, England, where she and Fedir were married in 1960. In 1967 Maria and Fedir arrived in Canada where their first employment opportunity was working at Expo in Montreal, Quebec. They settled in Winnipeg in 1968 where they became members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mary the Protectress. Maria worked in a restaurant and Fedir became the custodian of the Cathedral where Maria later worked alongside her husband. They officially retired in 1990, but continued to be members of the parish where they were both involved in parish life. Maria and Fedir were members of the St. Andrews Benevolent Society and she was also a member of the Cathedral Sisterhood and St. Mary the Protectress Millennium Villa where she resided after Fedir's passing. When Maria was no longer able to live on her own she moved to Holy Family Home where she enjoyed her remaining years participating in their various activities. In November of 2008, on the 75th Anniversary of the Holodomor, the Province of Manitoba presented Maria with a Certificate of Recognition as a survivor of the Ukrainian Famine and Genocide of 1932 - 33 who had made Manitoba her home and had contributed richly to Manitoban society. Maria and Fedir had no children of their own or family in Canada, but were cared for by their church family who will miss her dearly. All Cathedral members will serve as honorary pallbearers by their presence at the funeral service. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 3, at the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Mary the Protectress, 820 Burrows Avenue, with Reverend Father Alexander Harkavyi officiating. Interment to follow at Glen Eden Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. CHRYSTOS VOSKRES KORBAN FUNERAL CHAPEL 204-956-2193
