BARBARA BARNARD June 24, 1924 - July 5, 2013 Peacefully on July 5, 2013, at Vista Park Lodge, Barb passed away at the age of 89 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Olive and Guelph, and her brother-in-law, Stan Hornby. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister and best friend, Thelma Hornby, niece Noreen Wilkes (Garry) and Ryan (Karen) and Lisa, nephew Craig Hornby (Lucie) and Cam; her brother Warren Barnard (Jocelyn) and nieces Lois (Steve) and Alison (John); cousin Gwen Greig (Richard) and Scott. Barbara graduated as a nurse from St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto in 1951 and did post graduate nursing in Toronto, New Jersey and New York, before returning home to Winnipeg to nurse. She continued her education at the University of Manitoba where she received her Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Education and her Masters of Education. She worked at Red River Community College starting as a nursing instructor, moving through the years to become Dean of Health, Family and Applied Sciences Division. In her earlier years she also served in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve. In Barbara's own words her happiest times were "the many summers she spent at her cottage at Falcon Lake with her sister and her nieces and nephews and the winters she spent with her sister at Marco Island, Florida where many friendships were made." She also enjoyed the years she spent at Dakota House, being one of the original tenants there, before her declining health forced the move to Vista Park Lodge. Our family wishes to thank all the staff of Vista Park Lodge for the care given to Barb, especially Leona and John. Following cremation, a family graveside service was held at St. John's Cemetery.
