MICHAEL HAWRYSH June 12, 1937 - July 23, 2013 With sadness and profound sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Michael Hawrysh, on July 23, 2013. Michael was born June 12, 1937 and raised at Ledwyn, Manitoba. He is survived by his beloved wife Emily, sons Greg (Darlene) of Winnipeg and Evan (Linda) of Ottawa, grandsons Adam, Matthew, and Nicolas, and granddaughters Natasha and Nia. He is predeceased by his eldest son, Michael, and daughter-in-law Tracey. Michael is survived by sisters Eva Klymchuk, MaryAnn (Ken) Giesbrecht, Jane (Ingvar) Jacobson, brothers Nick (Sharon) and Ernie (Marilyn), as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and brothers- and sisters-in-law. He is predeceased by many treasured relatives, including his parents Michael and Maria. Following graduation from high school he obtained employment in Southern Ontario and pursued an education in the new area of computer science. He returned to Winnipeg and accepted a supervisory position in the insurance industry and was involved with the inception of the Manitoba Hospital Services Commission and the Winnipeg Ambulance Service. During this time, in 1958 Michael married his sweetheart Emily Ambrose of Rembrandt, MB. He later became General Manager of United Health Insurance Services Corporation, which he restructured as Manitoba Blue Cross. He took great pride in the design of extended health plans that increased coverage to the citizens of Manitoba. Several years later, he left Blue Cross to establish Gemstar Insurance Services in Winnipeg and Arborg. This business offered him considerable personal satisfaction in dealing with his many customers and friends. Michael was a person with many skills and interests. He enjoyed analyzing challenges and finding solutions that involved his own unique combination of engineering skill and mechanical aptitude. His many accomplishments included building the family home in Birds Hill, designing and building farm machinery, and repairing all types of motor vehicles. He also had a keen interest in woodworking and hunting. After retirement in 1997, he became more active in market gardening. As the yields increased, he donated several tons of produce to Winnipeg Harvest and other charitable organizations. Michael was a civic-minded individual who gave much of his time and energy to assist others. He served as a municipal councillor in East St. Paul, he was a member and later chairman of the board of the Holy Family Nursing Home, and was also a board member of the Banff School of Advanced Management for many years. In addition, he was a member of the Holy Eucharist Church parish committee and served as President of the Ukrainian Professional and Business Club. In 1982 he chaired a committee that organized the reunion of students who graduated from Tarno School in the Interlake. In 2004, he chaired the committee that honoured the early settlers of Ledwyn. Most recently, he had completed a historical account of the Hawrysh family in Canada. Michael took great pride in working on these projects and in their success. His compassion, knowledge, and humour will be missed by all who knew him. He always made himself available to help others in any area, in any way that he could. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Parish, 505 Watt Street, Winnipeg, MB, at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2013. Rev. Fr. Michael Kwiatkowski and Rev. Fr. Taras Kowch officiating. Interment shall take place at the Immaculate Conception Parish Cemetery at Cooks Creek. Korban Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, a contribution may be made to a charity of their choice. Vichnaya Pamyat Everlasting Memory

  • Dear Aunty Emily & Family, I am so sorry to hear of Uncle Michael's passing. There are no words in this world that will make the pain of Losing a Loved one any easier. I always admired Uncle Michael and always held close in my heart the visits that Danny and I had with you both and how Uncle Michael always spoke of Daddy and things they did. I will miss those or the times we or I would come for vegetables and ready to pay and You both would say "No that's ok, maybe next time or let's meet for lunch". We still have not met for lunch. Take care. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. I will miss and remember Uncle Michael always. - Posted by: Judy Barnych (Neice) on: Jul 27, 2013
