YOLANDE GENTHON (nee BOURBONNAIS) November 16, 1919 August 14, 2013 Yolande died peacefully at age 93 on August 14, 2013 with family praying at her bedside. Mom was predeceased by her husband Michael, sisters, Leonne, Lorraine, Gislaine, and brothers Lucien and Leo. Yolande is survived by brothers Louis (June), John, Fr. Denis O.M.I., and Philippe, sister-in-law Maureen; and her daughters, Helene Carey, Marguerite (Brent) Taylor, Lorraine Campbell, Louise Genthon, Annette Mains, Yvonne Roberts, Madeleine Genthon; grandchildren, Michael (Cindy) Campbell, Richard (Caroline) Campbell, Adam Dalman, Matthew Dalman, Andre (Charlotte) Genthon, Arliss Mains, Charlotte (Jeff) Harris, Chantelle (Todd) Stone, Charmaine Galbraith, Marie Galbraith, Christine Carey, David Carey, Gary Taylor, Rodney Taylor, Joy (Chris) Evans, Corinne Taylor; and great-grandchildren, Alizandra Daleman, Cassandra Campbell, True Dalman, Breanna and Michael Genthon, Cheryl ,Shauna, Cindy, Samantha, and Derek Mains, Brandon and Tyler Harris, Hannah, Sydney, and Caitlin Stone, Anita, Daniela, Jamison, and Jordan Carey, Joseph, Kirstian, Courtney, Kenneth, Emily and McKenna Taylor, Faith and Nathan Evans, Tyler and Sadie Meacher, and countless nieces and nephews and their families. Yolande went to elementary school at Ecole du Sacre-Coeur in Winnipeg, and Daniel McIntyre for high school. She stayed at home taking care of her brothers while her sisters went to work. Later, she began working as a bookkeeper at different places, most notably at Inter-Collegiate Press. Family meant everything to Yolande: playing bridge with her siblings and their spouses, singing with family around the piano, Christmas dinners at her mother's; then Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, and birthday dinners at her home, especially family gatherings at the cottage on Lake Manitoba; the more family present, the merrier. Church music ministry was very important to Yolande, as she sung in Paroise du Sacre-Coeur choir and was privileged to be part of the choir selected for the famous visit by Pope John Paul II. She even directed the choir and congregation at the St. Laurent Parish Catholic church while living at the cottage. Sports was also one of Yolande's favourite pastimes. She and Mike spent many hours in front of the television watching their favourite teams play football, hockey, and curling. Later on in life, Yolande took up curling herself, and gave it her all. She became the skip of her team and loved the competition. Becoming legally blind did not slow her down. Not being able to drive any longer, she did not like to impose on anyone and having to rely on rides, most of her time was then spent at home. Becoming a widow at age 87 meant family had to pull together to care for Yolande. In late 2009, she went to live with her daughter Lorraine in BC ,then while there, Hilltop personal care home became her home for one and a half years. In early 2012, Yolande moved back to Winnipeg to the St. Norbert Personal Care Home to be with most of her family. Yolande's sacrificial love for her family and strong Catholic faith will forever be a testimony to her life. Her strong will and gentle smile said it all. Everyone who knew her, were touched by her soul. Her passing on the vigil of the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a special blessing. Prayers will be held Monday, August 19, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Coutu Funeral Chapel, 680 Archibald Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Roman Catholic Church, 609 Leola Street. May Yolande rest in the Peace of Christ with all the Holy Angels and Saints. The Coutu family in care of arrangements: E.J. COUTU & CO. FUNERAL DIRECTORS 680 Archibald Street 204-253-5086 ejcoutu.com

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I didn't know Mike and Yolande very well, they came to our home when I was a kid to visit with my parents Art and Etta and there were occasionally family parties with violin & piano that we kids would watch longingly from the staircase. I remember both Mike and Yolande as being warm and friendly people. God Bless. - Posted by: Kathleen Leveque (Cousin) on: Aug 21, 2013
